Has anyone on PH got a full list of the 134 Vulcan Air frames produced , technical specifications and their status ,

The Wikipedia info only mentions those that survive today , im looking at more comprehensive info ,

we had one fly low over our school in Dorset in early 80s , was a very memorable moment

thanks

I think one of the books I have at home lists the airframes, I'll take a look later.

When you say technical specifications and status what exactly do you mean?

BBC documentary "Jet! When Britain Ruled The Skies".

Recommended, especially the second episode about the V-force. It was shown relatively recently but unfortunately isn't available on iPlayer at the moment. Key point was that from among Valiant, Victor and Vulcan it was the Vulcan that was most successful. Many Valiants and Victors were shaken to pieces when flown low in turbulent air after being designed for high altitude; a few Victors ended up as tankers and kept going a lot longer.

I was watching it on iPlayer last night.

It was made in 2016 so is a bit out of date regarding some of the preserved aircarft featured.

The Victor was the best of the V bombers in that it met the original requirement better than the Vulcan and Victor. However, with the switch to low level in the mid 1960s, it didn't fare so well but made a good tnker.

It always seems to me that the Vulcan has 2-3 times more wing area than it needs, but evidently it's right...!

It was designed to fly at around 60,000 feet so you need a lot of wing up there - especially if you are using what was essentially mid 1940s wing aerodynamic knowledge..

There's lots of information about my local Vulcan XL426 on the website avrovulcan.com .

Just Google XL426 or Vulcan Restoration Trust if the link above does not work.

thanks very much

It was very sobering to here the rear crew x3 had practically no chance to get out alive in an accident , both front pilot and co pilot had ejector seats , not fitted in the rear

an ex pilot Nick Denis mentioned 16 accidents resulting in a total loss , out of those 10 which resulted in fatalities the rear crew were all killed

sobering stuff

From the losses register

One very unlucky pilot had two accidents in XM 610 then in XM 645

The most famous Vulcans were those featured in the Bond movie Thunderball XA913 (ground) and XH506 (flying scenes).

they made a full scale mock up in the Bahamas for the underwater scenes

and a model for the vulcan landing on water and sinking

I think there's a case for adding XH558 to that description

The story of the Vulcans scrapped at Halton must have made for an amazing sight as the planes were stripped for weight elsewhere before being flown into the very short grass strip there for final dismantling - a great contrast to the long more formal concrete runways almost everywhere else

I remember seeing them at Marham when I was a kid, they always towered over the old wooden fencing where the Victors usually stood I remember. I used to go on the base in the school holidays with my dad who was a contractor on there and I used to merrily drive his old Escort van all around the airbase. It's where I learned to drive when I was about 10.

The joys of 1980s parenting, "just don't drive into any aeroplanes" hehe

Vulcans at Marham? Maybe on a short detachment while runway repairs were carried out at Scampton/Waddington? I was there 1982 to 1987, and don’t remember having more than one on the airfield, usually 558 doing display practice.

At Farnborough 2008, on take off XH558 blew my cap right off of my head.

Carry on.
