Who would visit Doncaster Airport to see this Vulcan in isolation when they can go to air museums and see dozens of aircraft together - Newark Air Museum is less than 35 miles away. I know it was the last one flying and has Black Buck connections etc. etc. but as far as the paying public are concerned, it's now just another grounded Vulcan.
I just read £125 was the cost of watching an engine run at Doncaster earlier this month

'558 has no connections to the Falklands Black Buck missions, only 301 engined Vulcans were used for the BB ops.'558 is a 200 series engine B.2

You've got to be a quite a few slices short of a loaf to pay that for that IMHO.

That's the bit I don't understand - why didn't they find a better home for it before the enthusiasm had worn off?Newark is a good little museum, there's the Lincs Aviation Heritage Centre, no doubt others around as well that would've kept it indoors and open for viewings etc.

That's the bit I don't understand - why didn't they find a better home for it before the enthusiasm had worn off?Trouble is there really wasn't much other option with a runway and suitable hangar space to keep a Vulcan in that didn't already get one when RAF retired them all.
Only other place might have been YAM at Elvington, as they have a live Victor there as well, (which would have made a good joint fund raising option) but again, space limitations, no hanger and by some accounts they didn't want it either (although, I suspect they didn't want VTTS rather than didn't want the actual aircraft?)
Its a shame decisions hadn't been made by then about Scampton, as if the rumours of some sort of heritage centre there once RAF leave, that would have been the perfect option.
How much does the Newark museum charge for the cockpit tour ?
I wouldn't pay £125 to watch an engine run either - but I would gladly pay that for the privilege of a cockpit tour and a few minutes sitting in each of the crew's seats - and I imagine there would be a long queue of people who think likewise. I assume the security issues of having non security cleared people airside at Doncaster precludes VTTS from offering this.

My mistake, getting aircraft serials in a complete muddle...

Go to Coventry. It's cheap to get in, lots of other things to see, good café and the Vulcan has a guide who tells some cracking tales - no extra charge, and mid-week you'll probably be the only one there. Sit in any of the seats & marvel at the immense discomfort! In fact, if you come on a Monday or Friday, I'll try to join you! PH trip, anyone?
Gloucester Jet Age Museum, just down the road from me, is free. They ask for a donation that's all.
They have a Vulcan cockpit, which again, is free to access.
Great little museum if you're passing.

Looks rather like a 'don't think you meant to do that' moment at just past 4 minutes.

A quiet word in the pilots ear occurred after that IIRC.........aeropilot said:

A quiet word in the pilots ear occurred after that IIRC.........I heard that the word was from the display organisers rather than the CAA, who did not investigate. I also understand that it was quite standard for a different crew to fly on Sunday to the Saturday crew, and you could always tell when Kev Rumens was in charge as he tended to fly it like he stole it!
