Looking for a Perkins 4236 marine engine
Discussion
Hello!
I am searching for a Perkins 4236 marine engine on behalf of my father who needs a replacement engine for his 40' sailboat (a Spencer). The boat is currently located in The Netherlands so an engine on the continent would be prefered but I can certainly make arrangements to have it shipped there. If you know of one for sale please give me a call on 07044 016586 or send me an e-mail at info@dta-motorsport.co.uk.
Much obliged!

Spares for the 4236 and the 6354 6 banger are becoming scare, I'd look carefully and spending the money on something newer.I am searching for a Perkins 4236 marine engine on behalf of my father who needs a replacement engine for his 40' sailboat (a Spencer). Thanks for the replies - much appreciated!
@ Motorvator - I've looked at that particular engine and unfortunately it is not marinised (it also requires some refurbishment).
@ Huntsman - Yes, we're fast coming to the same conclusion. Have been looking at Volvo Pentas and Merc engines but find the price difference an issue.

There are based in the UK rather than the Europe but may be worth trying Coastal Rides - www.coastalrides.com
Spotted this ad updated on the 8th Jan, selling for 300 notes, apparently marinised.

Thanks Huntsman - I've bookmarked that site.
A replacement engine has now been located and purchased and will be tested prior to installation into the boat next week. Found one in The Netherlands in the end so much easier for transportation.
Many thanks to everyone who's been so helpful with information! Much appreciated.
Kind regards,
Dan

Just a guess ..........
I'm looking to buy a Huntsman 28 or 31 but I'm new to Faireys - previous boats have been soap dishes (eg Fairline 40). No experience of wooden hulls so I would appreciate some advice on what to look for, what to avoid, which engines are best etc. Not in any great hurry - would like to be on the water spring 2010. I'm Solent based - perhaps I could pick your brains. I would appreciate it if you could mail me at: mail@bramblings.fsworld.co.uk. Thanks - John

expect a lot of heartache and $$$ .... I'm looking to buy a Huntsman 28 or 31 but I'm new to Faireys
28's and 31's are very different boats.
The hot moulded hull shells are generally in reasonable shape, but the ply can be rotten as can the mahogany scantlings, you either need to be able to survey the boat yourself very thoroughly or you need to find a surveyor who is prepared to take the time to thoroughly inspect a boat for you, or get one of the local boatbuilders with Fairey boat experience to look over it.
Most will either have Perkins 6.354's (as mine has) which are fine, if a little under powered in a 31. Some early 28's might have 6D's which again are a little under powered and suffer from excess weight. Ford Dorset or Dover or Perkins Phasers will be just lovely in either boat, go careful with big HP number looking for damage esp in early 31's.
How much to spend depends on your budget, how much you intend to do your self, if you want a project, a going concern of a concourse winner.
A 28 could be from under 10k to about 35 tops.
A 31 could be 20k to 45 tops I think.
Join the FOC.
Check out Gordon Currey, Nicole Assoc and Transworld for boats on the market.
There a very cheap 28 on the market right now and last time I saw it I thought it looked ok.
Look carefully at the Spearfish too.
Email me if you want to know more, i'll give you my phone number and we can chat.
I've had mine 6 years, rebuilt it myself, had a Huntress before that.
