Watching the footage from the tower overlooking the Hudson I'm surprised one of those boats didn't crush anyone or force the plane under when they tried to get folks off the wings.

It's what I thought when watching the rescue - they were operating in a fast moving river and they're not exactly easy to manoeuvre. Some of the folks rescued said that they had to shout to the ferries to stop as they were running the risk of hitting the passengers.

Had I not known that everyone survived I'd of had my hand in my mouth watching that.

Can anyone explain "cactus"?
I believe its a result of the merger between America West and US Airways! They kept the 'cactus' callsign after dropping the 'USAir' that they used to use. They were using both for a while if wikipedia is accurate!

yes 'Catcus' is the call sign for the airline. I like the BA call sign of 'speedbird' myself, it has a certain purpose about it.
so what is Virgin's?
"Cherrystillintact 737 request runway insertion, over." biggrin

Not impressed really.

Madame said why didnt the ditch button get pressed, why no mayday call, are checklists that long that they cant complete them?

So I played her a recording of the ATC in real time. She had the impression that they had about 10 times longer than in reality because of the editing and waffle.

So it wasnt a miracle, it wasnt a crash and it all happened just a lot faster than shown.
play her this one, she can hear and see the whole event in real time.

No it's not. BA's is 'Speedbird' and Virgin's is 'Slowbird'!

There are soom quite interesting callsigns out there. Snoopy is a good one smile
I like "Red Comet" and "Reach" which I always think seems very apt for them.

Go for it! In the UK there is no upper age limit for application and you dont need any sort of aviation background.

I'd so love to be one, I think you probably have to be very clever, and although i'm not dumb or anything.. I didn't try in exams at school and they always drag me down straight away frown

Yes, I just read that you only need 5 C+ GCSES, i've got them.. Hmm it is very tempting.

I'll need to do some more reading when i'm more awake, 10 hours solid driving yesterday has taken it out of me hehe

That's just to be considered for the job.

I had a conversation with a NATS guy the other day and he was telling me they have something like a 40% drop out rate in training, which to me looks like their entry requirements and interview/recruitment tests need to be looked at.

I would argue the opposite...

bit's of meaningless (Nu-Lab) GCSE's etc. are no predictor of how somebody is going to be able to do a job, I like the idea that they take in a lot and fail a good proportion... it's one of those jobs where you ether have an aptitude for it or you don't, and I don't think bit's of paper can tell you that.

Bumpitybumpbumpbump...

11:35 tonight (march 2nd) on Channel 4

"Miracle of the Hudson Plane Crash"

'People who were actually on it' accounts, footage of their dry-cleaner bills, etc

ETA this is just for those who missed it the first (eighteen) times around, like me.
