Any who can remember the Chipmonk instruction video- soooo 70s. I've tried to find it on Youtube, but no luck..

Brilliant times in the ATC. Such a shame about this news.

This is a very sad accident, which like others, I hope doesnt change anything in the policy of giving cadets flights. I still look back to my time in the cadets and the flights in Chipmunks were and are till some of the highlights, real flying! And I laughed when I was reminded of the parachute waddle.

You won't get the pilots names for a while, you know what the RAF are like on releasing details. It'll have to go through the families first. I'll check with one of my mates ater and make sure it wasn't any of the QFI's I knew.

It's very unfortunate that two most recent accidents involving Cadets happened in Wales. The Wessex crash happened in Snowdonia.

One of the greatest disdvantages I had of growing up in Ireland is that there was nothing like the ATC that a youngster could join. I had a Welsh friend who used to tell me all about summer camps at Sealand and other RAF bases and the fun they had flying Chippies and gliders and getting rides in Hercs doing circuits and bumps at Lyneham. He made me very jealous.

+1 yes

Humour apart this is very sad news, when you are 14 or 15 you don't think about the risks.

I agree that it's sad news, but the thought of walking with that 'chute lightened the thought briefly

Sod knows I didn't think about it when I was 21! First most of my mind was memorising all the damn checklists!

Walking with the parachute on was nothing compared to the effort of climbing up onto the wing of the Chipmunk, lifting your leg into the cockpit then somehow falling into the rear seat!

cloud9 stall turns, barrel rolls, slow rolls, all good fun. Even the emergency landing at Benson was fun in its own way..

Copy/paste from the BBC News Website:

The cadets were Nikita Marie Walters, 13, and Katie-Joe Davies, 14, both from Gilfach Goch in Rhondda Cynon Taf.

The pilots were Hylton Price from Bridgend and Andrew Marsh from Vale of Glamorgan.

No mention of Rank or Sqn though.

My experience

Pilot - 'Ever flown before?'
Me - 'Yep did another taster a year ago'
Pilot - 'Do you want to do some Aerobatics'
Me (takes one look at big sticker across the instrument panel of the Bulldog that said 'High Fatigue Airframe - No Aerobatics') - 'Err, no thanks'
Pilot - 'Tough st, because I do!'

I had to tell him I felt sick after a few minutes... which was only half a lie

I shouldn't worry, we were not supposed to do flicks or square loops in the Grobs due to hairline fractures developing on the wing spars. Wings managed not to fall off.

Still, doing barrel rolls and loops in a plane that has a large sticker across the dash implying the wings aren't far from falling off didn't fill me with confidence! hehe
