I shouldn't worry, we were not supposed to do flicks or square loops in the Grobs due to hairline fractures developing on the wing spars. Wings managed not to fall off.
Still, doing barrel rolls and loops in a plane that has a large sticker across the dash implying the wings aren't far from falling off didn't fill me with confidence! hehe
Surely the "bail out" instructions and lesson should have instilled that confidence hehe

Oh what the video where they showed the cadet climbing out of the cockpit, onto the wing and jump away from the tail... while the plane is flying perfectly level, isn't on fire, and isn't spiralling towards the ground.

I think that day single handedly inflicted my fear of flying!

A sad day, I remember my AEF flights (3 of them in a Bulldog and 2 motor gliders) great fun I'll always remember my first AEF fondly, as it was the first time I had flown in anything.

Condolences to the Families

No mention of Rank or Sqn though.
Oh no!

I've played tennis with Hylton, he was in Saudi with my old man. The world is just far too small.

So the RAF is virtually the adult section of the ATC.

I think it's less than that presently.

More in the region of 37,000 IIRC. Take another one of that total very soon also wink

it would seem that the cadets have more people in it than we have in active service.

It is true. There are more cadets wearing the uniform of the RAF than the regulars themselves.

Often when the regs take the p1ss of the kids, the quick reply is to remind them that the RAF is the Operational Wing of the Air Training Corps.

I think the staff costs for the ATC might be a bit lower than the regular Air Force.

Having missed out on the ATC as a youth (due to being born in the wrong country), I've being toying with the idea as joining as an adult supervisor (or whatever they are called). I keep picking up their brochure at the Farnborough Air Show (they always have a stand there) but I am put off by the fact that I am too committed to other hobby activities.

Very sad news frown

I was on a different UAS but spent a week flying from St Athan in the summer of 2002. I flew a solo aerobatics flight in that very area, and remember how fantastic it was. I imagine those two girls were either having the time of their life, or feeling very ill. Thoughts are with the family and friends of those involved.

39,000 plus staff as of 1/4/08. My original figures were a few years out of date.
