My question got overlooked so obviously time for it's own thread.
Is there a wreck site where a ship or submarine has sunk and landed on top of another already sunken vessel?
With all the ships lost at Sea in both War & Peace time it must of happended at least once. If not directly on top of each other perhaps very close?

I saw a programme on the TV once, they were diving on a WWII Japanese wreck and found an older one under it. Not sure where, might have been Truk lagoon.
Ok will have a look. A link to a big diving group who seem to live at Truk lagoon was posted last week so shall have a proper nosey.'The Deep', Peter Benchley's follow-up novel after Jaws and a film with Jacqueline Bisset and Robert Shaw was all about this. They found a sunken Spanish treasure galleon that had a WWII cargo ship full of morphine sunk on top of it. Some reefs have killed ship after ship so it would be surprising if some shipwrecks weren't on top of older ones.

A Double-Wrecker, so to speak.Bushmaster said:

Has one of the best intros to any movie ever. And yes the SMS Cormoran / Tokai Maru wrecks were what I was thinking about.
If you look at the navigation charts for the Thames estuary, at a certain point they stop including wrecks apart from those that are hazardous because there are so many the chart would be very cluttered. I don't know if there are any that are literally on top of another, but there are enough that there are likely to be some in very close proximity.

pearl harbour?
Nope, the ones that sank were in shallow water (harbour) - no chance to overlap.I think we should build a dam at each end of the English Channel and pump all the water out. It would be astonishing to see how much history there is down there.

Using a structure like they do building concrete bridge supports they could isolate a specially selected portion of the Channel/estury and dig it up with Tony Robinson & Phil, YARRRRRRRRR.

ETA: Reading more on the SMS Cormoran is appears it ran out of coal and the sailors lived in Guam for 2 years before the outbreak of WW1 when they scuttled the ship losing 13 men in the process & spending the WAt as prisoners! 6 years+, my god I hope they settled in or that'd be a touch boring. Also if would your mrs really wait all that time for you to get back & drill her. Doubt it.

Yes, off the coast of South Devon.I think there is a point where there are three wrecks piled on top of each other just south of Hallsands. IIRC there are 6,000 odd wrecks in about 30 miles of water or something quite ridiculous.
edit
If you go to the lighthouse at Start Point you can get a really good tour of the lighthouse and brief history of the area. You will also learn that if you are at sea and you see a red light coming from the lighthouse - you are pretty much screwed and are about to sink and die, "have a nice life, what's left of it."

This lady diver is touching both the SMS Cormoran & Tokai Maru.
They do or did actually touch because one has been peeled open by the other.
