Sadtimes for many vessels to an early grave Six months to totally dismember a cruise liner.
Always wondered why they don't remove the lifeboats before they get sent for scrapping. They must have some value

Slightly different to how the Bangladeshis work, I've posted this before but its a fantastic documentary on how they recycle ships in the Indian sub continent. Very much worth a watch.

Interesting read about that: http://www.wesjones.com/shipbreakers.htm

"High security Two-level parking with an area of 25,000 sq. m. Lighting, filling stations, compressed air, nitrogen , sprinkler and foam fire extinguishing system + vertical lifts with a lifting capacity of 49 tons.

Parking can be delivered in the shortest possible time to any area of the World Ocean. The cost of the elite property is $ 5 billion.

Something like this can describe the events of January 10, 2012. In the Pacific Ocean there was a US Navy strike aircraft carrier, the flight deck of which was jam-packed with passenger cars of various brands.

The USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76) was transferred from the main base (Naval Base San Diego, California) to the Puget Sound shipyard (Bremerton, Washington) for the first scheduled maintenance in her career and replacement of the reactor core. The crew of the aircraft carrier (3,200 sailors) had to proceed with their ship to the new duty station & the Navy allowed them to take their favorite toys with them.

The Pentagon is rich, but flatly refused to pay third-party firms for the transportation of cars across the country. Indeed, why do we need hundreds of trailers, if such a "Barge" is available.

That one had me googling to see if it was genuine.

Wonder why they didn't use one of the RoRo ships like the bob hope class.

The carrier was making the journey anyway, so was the easiest and simplest thing to do.

USS Narwhal being launched in 1967. I had no idea they'd have so many people onboard when launching a boat.

Launched in 2001 and needed a new reactor core in 2012? I thought they were fueled for 25+ years? Did they have a problem with a reactor?

Coming out of the Tanjong Pagar Container Terminal in Singapore and into the west bound TSS so heading back to Europe (probably) there.

Sentosa Island just behind, and Singapore CBD behind (you can see Marina Bay Sands end on to the right. )

(edit - either that or heading into the Pasir Panjang container terminal ..... )

Ok, not "amazingly cool", but I was quite happy with how this phone snap of Queen Mary 2 came out the other week, when on a mate's boat in Southampton Water.

I'm looking at her now. She's anchored up in Babbacombe bay, along with another 2 cruise liners, and there are another three round the headland (Hope's Nose) in Torbay.

She's been here for a good while - disappears for a couple of days at a time and then comes back.

That picture isn't, the crane in the background is modern.
True, it's in Mobile Alabama - I guess my source was wrong frown

Back to that Pic, it really does highlight and demonstrate what an own goal the Jones Act can be, and how it hampers salvage work like this, never mind power generation infrastructure such as offshore wind in the USA.

If you've not seen it before, here's a great video of one of her sister ships (Peking) sailing around the Horn in a 'bit of a blow'

What an absolute nutter.

Funny attitude though.. "We didn't have safety at all, you just held on because it would be stupid not to" followed a short while later by... "Those 2 fell overboard on the way home, 2 empty bunks and nobody said much". frown

Update

It is amazing to see how they can just use a chain to saw and rip through a ship
(Not 100% that’s the case this time But I recall discussions with SmitTak back in the day on the subject)
