The Invincible Class & Ocean are completely different. OK, they both have "flat tops" but that's where the similarity ends. Invicible et al were built to full warship standards with extensive internal sub division and were designed for the anti submarine warfare role; they have extensive command, control, communications & sensor facilities plus the well known ability to carry & support the Harrier operationally. They orignally had a Sea Dart missile system forward, too, but that has since been removed. Invincible Class are powered by 4 x Olympus Gas Turbines.

Ocean was built on a "liner" type hull to merchant standards - cheap & cheerful really and designed to carry helicopters and Royal Marines. Very limited command & control or sensor fit etc, very limited self protection and only the after part of the flight deck was strengthened to allow the Harrrier to land in a "ferry" role, not to act as an oprational Carrier. Ocean is powered by Diesel engines. For all that, nothing wrong with Ocean, she is good value for money for what she is & its is a pity we don't have a couple more of them but she is not a Carrier & never will be.

Sorry if I'm being a "spotter", I served in Illustrious in the mid 80s.

You forgot to mention the fact that they got the front end wrong on the Ocean so that as you walk forward you find yourself walking up a slope. That's the trouble with having different yards building different parts of the ship.

Served on Illustrious in the late 80's

Shar2, given your nickname on here & the fact that you are an aircraft engineer we might have crossed paths - I was on 814 in 1984 & 899/ VL workshops 87-89. I then sold my soul to become a Seaman Officer, I was better at that than I was as a Tiff! I bet we know some of the same people!

Thanks for that.

I was under the impression that the Ocean was just the Invincible design built by civilian yards.

Very likely. I was on 846 during '86 then joined 899 early '88 thence onward to 800 late 88 till '90. My last two years were at AMG/VL. I started as a Tiff in '84, but flucked my exams and recated to AEM. Still no regrets, as the experience got me the job i'm in now.

Not so much cool, as sad.

SS Blue Lady, (ex-SS Norway, ex-SS France) driven into the beach at Alang India for scrapping 2007-2008. Before the building of the Queen Mary 2 this was the longest passenger ship ever built.
Plenty of ships waiting to be broken up here inc an aircraft carrier http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&a...

Don't think the carrier, (Foch), is there anymore as last time I heard it's has been towed to be broken up with the US ghost ships in the North East of England, (Hartlepool?).

Are you sure that's Foch?

Isn't Foch now renamed Sao Paulo, serving with the Brazilian Navy?

ETA: That would appear to be Clemenceau.

You are quite correct, I had the right class, just the wrong ship, plus Foch is easier to spell biggrin

On this link, if you follow the coast up a little bit.. Theres a weird triangle shaped ship, any information on that?

(I'd link it, but for some reason maps doesn't remember where your looking)

Isn't it just a Supertanker that has been part dismantled, the bow and front half gone leaving rear half only.

Guardian suggests it's the former Hellespont Grand.

I just watched the Perfect Storm again the other night. I loved it, and it has some awesome footage of a container ship and oil tanker getting smashed around by some huge waves. A really good movie, though probably not very realistic if you know about boats.
