It is appalling excess frankly, as he freely admitted.
Unquestionably, however, as I've argued on several occasions, it is the ultimate example of trickle-down economics. Far better billionaires spend millions on boats than keeping it in a bank/investments as far as the economy is concerned.

It's like the same people who complain space exploration is a waste of money - it's like they genuinely believe the money is fired off into space in a rocket, rather than being spent and supporting businesses and workers here on earth.

Absolutely.

I am no ‘Greta enthusiast’ but I was shocked at the Heli-ski Antarctica adventure.

That’s not just a case of using resources but where you use them.

Yes, and or, no.

The money doesn't "sit in the bank", the bank loans it out. In fact, the bank loans out far more money than they have as deposits, so say the billionaire puts £100m in the bank, the bank will lend out £600m or £700m to businesses and individuals. Now, say the bank leant £500m to a company developing an anti-cancer drug, that would be good use of capital, and far better than buying a boat with the £100m.

Trickle down economics is largely a discredited theory, and money put in the bank doesn't just "sit there".

Only if the company was successful, and possibly not even then. Otherwise it is just money going to different places. Is it better to pay some research scientist £200k per year, or to pay £100k per year to 2x craftsmen who help build yachts? That is very much a value judgement.

It's also a zero sum fallacy, that the boat being built means the cancer research (swoon, want to load it some more) equates to less elsewhere, in this case credit not being available to carry out the research. In reality even in simple terms the boat is an asset that can be leveraged.

U-17, all 50m/500t of it, arrives at the Technik Museum Speyer after a Journey by barge and road transport

As a side note, if you ever get the chance to visit this place, plus it’s sister the Sinsheim Technik, don’t hesitate, they are remarkable, there’s a thread elsewhere.

Ah that would explain it! There was another U-17 in WW1, so three in all.

They went past 999: https://uboat.net/boats/listing.html

'U' was used both under Kaiser Bill and Mr Hitler, so it's not change of government either.

It's not electric! That's buggered up the race series' net-zero-ness...

That has been posted in here before, very early in the thread I think? Certainly is unique and weird.

Not particularly unusual but quite close & perfect light passing HMS Iron Duke yesterday.

Not bad for a iPhone 8 camera.
