I guess this is the right forum?

Myself & BG junior are going to RAF Wittering for their families open day, there will be flying displays and all sorts of other cool stuff going on. We will be there with the Bentley Drivers Club and will be displaying our cars as some added interest for everyone.

Now, BG junior is in the ATC, and I have suggested that maybe he would come along in his smart blues uniform. But the idea of this has sent him into a teenage fit of embarrassed self consciousness, and he says absolutely not!

I thought it would be cool for him to be 'part of the gang' as it were, but maybe I am wrong and he should go in civvies.

Would anyone with any knowledge of the correct dress protocol like to comment? It would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Why not take his uniform to change in to if it becomes advantageous to do so?

If he goes in uniform then he'll have to salute the officer types he meets and generally have to behave as he'll be seen to be representing the cadets.
It'll be a far more relaxing day if he goes in civvies.

are you wanting him to spend the day parking cars?

If so get him to wear them.

However unless it is Squadron or at the very least his region with people he knows it is a bit pointless.

We used to do at Elvington and there were parents like you who made their kids come in Uniform, my god we gave them the sttest jobs so we could go off and fk about.

As someone else said, if he's in uniform he'll need to act in uniform. Also, there is bound to be the local squadron ATC there helping out, and this might confuse them- espeiclly if they are working/guarding/collecting money (it will be the latter) and he isnt...

...But then again, he wont get invited to sit in a Harrier...

--Also the uniform and brevet can get very hot,

So, in summery: persoanlly I would'nt. But it wont hurt to take his 3822 so he can talk to pilots/ ask to sit in machinery... (and, of course Dad will have to follow...!)

His ATC service book, usable as ID.

Good advice to take his little blue book.

Cadets are very loyal to their own squadron, outsiders aren't too welcome.

agreewith taking his 3822, but dont agree with asking him to wear uniform its not cool in any way.

I do understand that you are proud of his commitment to the ATC, my dad would have suggested I do the same thing so that he could possibly get closer to some aircraft!

I'm not surprised he's against your suggestion. Why would your son want to go in his ATC uniform?

I wonder if the security conditions are less relaxed than they used to be - he may not be able to wear his uniform outside of squadron activities for fear of 'drawing attention' from the wrong sort. I wore my cadet uniform for my work experience on 25sqrn but I wouldn't wear it here - his 3822 should get him into aircraft n'stuff.

You'll have a good day!

Cheers

It'd be a bit, err, bizarre to pitch up in ATC uniform unless he was 'on duty' with his Sqn or Wing doing something official.

During my 8 years as a Space Cadet I'd never heard of anyone doing this. Certainly didn't occur to me... Agree with posts above; he'd probably eventually get collared into parking cars by an unwitting member of ATC adult staff assuming he was there with a Sqn. Might then lead to some upset that he was there 'representing' the ATC but without official consent. They might not be happy if they find he's not on the nominal headcount roll if the st hits the fan for any reason etc.

I understand your sentiment BG, but rulez is rulez. I was amazed at how much more of a grip PC and 'elf & safety' had increased in the ATC between me leaving as a cadet in the 80s and going back as adult staff in the late 90s. Christ knows how restrictive things are now. It's a great organisation though, I had an excellent time in the ATC.

Absolutely. When we have children, if they dont join the local ATC I'll be a little bit upset. I had a great time, and it taught me a lot about behaving like an adult...

Indeed.

The camps were a fantastic place to get laid. thumbup

Also great for other things, definitely recommend it. In my days it was Middlesborough and Stockton who had the hotties. However this may now of changed.

Except when your girlfriend's sister is also at summer camp with you and clocks the pretty female corporal you've just hooked climbing through the window into your single man room at 1am. Had a bit of explaining to do when I got home after that one...
