Just returned from Ireland on a work trip and don't fly too much. Can anyone tell me why on take off and landing the plastic window blinds have to be in the raised poition? The trolley dollies were keen to enforce this and I observed this from the aisle seat by the way. I can't see what difference it makes so why is this rule enforced? Also, why are the main interior lights switched off for take off and landing?

Just puzzled.

Thanks

For nightime operations the lights go off so that your eyes are already accustomed to the dark in case the take or landing goes pear shaped.

Also when the window blinds are open it is much easier for other aircraft to see your plane on the ground with all those extra lights.

Should there be an emergency that requires passenger evacuation of the aircraft, an open shade will make it easier for the people on board to assess the outside conditions and allow for vision equalization of the ambient lighting (This goes for day and night operations)

It also helps with spatial orientation to a degree, so helps prevent people from chucking up!

Thank you gentlemen. I knew there would be a coherent reason for it.

I've heard somewhere that another reason is to allow any rescue crews to see inside for a number of useful reasons (I don't know what these might be exactly).

Always useful for a quick double check before using the mechanical can-opener.
