So what's the purpose of these Special Ops planes? Just parachute drops or is there more to it?A friend of my dad's used to fly Hercules. Apparently at one stage they took to flying very (very) low over water and launching inflatables out the back with people sat in them! I believe it was only an exercise and they gave up after the accident rate turned out to be higher than active service. Of course it may just be an old wives tale reserved for gullable acquaintances.
Its is a grey area, been discussed on a couple of aviation forums.
What I gather is RAF Police do not have much juristiction outside the base, but can request normal Police to come and check you out/move you on.
Apparently if you are outside of the base taking photos in, then they could pull you up under the official secrets act.
Very rarely do airfields stop people taking photos, and a few do have enthusiast or spotter schemes in place.
The guy that stopped me also had a word with someone else the following day but was apparently quite rude that time.
Don't think anyone has had any further problems at Lyneham since.
