what's the difference between a standard and "special op's" herc, assuming you are allowed to answer without killimg me that is.....
Not sure of all the differences, I think it is mainly extra Counter measure equipment & chaff dispensers. You can usually see that they have a few extra lumps & bumps on them. Earlier in the thread we were discussing some extra boxes on the C1 aircraft near the cockpit, they were apparently for cameras.

Onto Snoopy, the W2 Herc, I think that made it's last flight a few weeks ago.

Pity we don't have any AC-130 Spectre variants.

So what's the purpose of these Special Ops planes? Just parachute drops or is there more to it?

A friend of my dad's used to fly Hercules. Apparently at one stage they took to flying very (very) low over water and launching inflatables out the back with people sat in them! I believe it was only an exercise and they gave up after the accident rate turned out to be higher than active service. Of course it may just be an old wives tale reserved for gullable acquaintances.

Slightly OT...

If you were not on the base I hope you told the RAF Policeman to go annoy someone else, whilst snapping away happily!

'Action'? Please define.

From my own experience they can not stop a member of the public from taking photographs from a public space.

Its is a grey area, been discussed on a couple of aviation forums.

What I gather is RAF Police do not have much juristiction outside the base, but can request normal Police to come and check you out/move you on.

Apparently if you are outside of the base taking photos in, then they could pull you up under the official secrets act.

Very rarely do airfields stop people taking photos, and a few do have enthusiast or spotter schemes in place.

The guy that stopped me also had a word with someone else the following day but was apparently quite rude that time.

Don't think anyone has had any further problems at Lyneham since.
