Some good pictures, thanks for sharing smile

I drive trains on WCML and I used to drive 87001, I had 87001 on one of it's last runs before it retired, I was on the 22.00 to Mcr Picc and I pulled up at Rugby with over 40 people taking pics smile

Is that where 87001 lives now in the NRM ??

Cheers ;-)

I can remember seeing 001 when it was new! Yes, it now lives at the NRM. Hard to believe they're not around everyday anymore...

I can tell I'm going to waste a lot of time going through your albums. Some great photos covering all sorts of things I like, including diesel hydraulic locomotives and parts of the railway network I've travelled on a fair bit such as the railway line through Evesham from Paddington to Worcester.

Thanks for sharing. I'm a Tamper driver/operator on the LNW. I'm familiar with quite a few of those locations!

I love the 'in cab' pic of you route learning with the tea brewing up! I agree, sometimes it can be very enjoyable.

Spectacular. Some fantastic images.

Love the Westerns.......will never bore of that Maybach roar. God I would love to go on the mainline in one of those old girls.

I see you are doing 66's now. What are they like to operate and will you be having a go on the new 70??? Nothing like a 20, 37, 56 etc but still interesting to get a point of view.

Cheers for the comments all wink

66s... hmmmm, built on the cheap, draughty, noisy, the compressor is driven directly off the engines crankshaft and rev's up and down constantly, the engine itself is bolted directly to the floor and vibrates right through the cab, at the number 2 end where the radiators are, the hot air being expelled comes back into the cab side windows, even at 60mph, so in summer it's like sitting in a glass house. Apart from that their one redeeming feature is their general reliabilty.

70s... should be passed out on them very soon with any luck, though I've still not seen one in the flesh yet.

Never driven a 20 (too late now) but have driven 08s, 09s, 25s, 31s, 37s, a single 40, 45s, 46s, 47s, 50s, 56s, 60s, 81s, 82s, 83s, 85s, 86s, 87s and just one 90 and one 92 wink

Ha ha, I think I know what you're getting at but I've only ever been based at Rugby, Stonebridge Park and Old Oak Common.... I guess I should have added that some of those locos were driven when I was still a secondman! As you probably know, back in those days it was common for secondmen to be put in the chair, I was quite lucky and managed to drive almost everyday. On occasions, we were left to move stuff around on our own in yards and in depot confines. First loco I ever drove was 25 051 at Willesden, seems like a lifetime ago now ;o)

The Banbury Ram.... rings a bell! I was there August '83 to about March '85.

Old Oak names I recall from when I was there...

Norman 'The Foreman' Porter, alas no longer with us, Mad Bill Sarney, Gordon the shed man (a dead ringer for Alfred Hitchcock!), 'Oblong' Bob Long, 'Fast' Eddy, Jack Benny, Jack Bennet, Trevor Netley, Lee Styles, John 'Flapper' Gladwin, Mark Bunny, Alan Bricker.....

So many memorys of OC packed into a relatively short amount of time... walking across to the main lines at four in the morning to pick up the freebies thrown down from the 'Alysbury Papers', The Acton / Southall tripper, turning the night sleepers round via the Greenford Loop, shunting Acton Yard with a 47 or a 50, steam heat jobs to Bristol, mileage jobs to Exeter and back on Summer Saturdays, thrashing newly refurbished 50s on the Padd-Brums, nipping up the BRSA for a quick jar, the warmth from the giant tea earn in the mess room at Padd on platform 1, sitting on the blocks at Padd in the cab watching the world go by, shunting locos on and off the turntable on a freezing cold morning, thrashing gutless 31s going up the engine and carriage flyover....happy days. Looking at my old photos now, it's like looking back on someone elses life!

There were three who's faces I recall but only two of their names, Gabriel the black fella, really nice laid back chap (his lad was a secondman too but can't remember his name) and Andy, a young lad who was the spitting image of snooker player Jimmy White.

Mick Yates, yes I think I remember him now.

Do you remember the driver with a glass eye who was green carded, he was always on C-Pilot over in the carriage sidings...?

Larry Harrison...? Had an old Mk3 Cortina estate, it was always filled up with junk.

Clive Hatch...? Not everyone got on with him but he was fine with me. Always let me drive!

Cyril Etheridge...?
