It doesnt look great, no, but for me there is just something about it.

Not many modern jets posted yet?

I love the panther- just about to ask mrs emsman if santa would like to bring me a rc one for christmas
Define "modern" jet.

The F-15 is 38 years old.
The F-16 dates from 1974.

I think the Eurofighter Typhoon is pretty neat looking.

I also think that the Airbus A340 is very elegant.

In a very very strange way... the A380 display at farnborough was very elegant.... its by no means pretty.. but it was very majestic in the air!

Can't say it loooks that great though.

Tunnan means "barrel" in Swedish.
All the Saab fighters have been interesting designs, from the Tunnan above to the Lansen

Draken

Viggen

and Gripen, which looks very delicate after all that has gone before!

There's a really interesting set of videos on youtube featuring the B58 Hustler narrated by the actor Jimmy Stewart, he also flew the aircraft.

Part 1's here...

Modern when compared to the avro, the scimitar, the lightning etc?

Its not a test, just a general comment.

The problem is that, since the 1970s, aircraft have a VERY long gestation period. many people would consider the F-15 a modern, current design but yet its roots date back to a specification set in 1968/69.

I think you could probably hive off the period 1941 to about 1965 as the period of "classic" jets. It was from the mid 1960s onwards that we entered a new phase where the internal systems and avionics in the aircraft were as much part of the specification as the airframe. This is what has led to these long development periods and a service life stretching over decades for the more "modern" types.

A mate of mine was a test pilot on that project for the USAF. He now flys for American Airlines. (Does drive a F355 and owns a Mondial, though, so AA must pay better...) hehe

OK, here are my top 5 favourites ( today at least, I may change my mind tomorrow )

1. The clean lines of the Canberra

2. Sheer awesomeness of the Valkyrie

3. Curvaceous Concorde

4. F-16XL

5. Vickers Valiant B.2 – another in the long list of superb British aircraft killed by an incompetent government

The other plane I think looks just right is the Pucara. Perhaps seeing them as a child watching the Falklands on the 6 O'Clock news helped. One of the few lean looking, pared back, combat aircraft - reminds me of a ground attack lotus 7.
