Nice!

We had one of the first F350’s to play with here at work. It’s a very nice engine, but so quiet! You can’t hear it idle and even when you’re really motoring, it’s strangely quiet! Not what you’d expect from a 5.3 litre V8 on the back of a boat. Effortless power and torque though, it just pulls like a train from any speed or sea state. We had it fitted to an 8.6m RIB. My girlfriend and I borrowed the boat from work for a weekend. We went from Lymington to Portsmouth and used about £200 worth of fuel (and that was a couple of years ago now!) just cruising over there and having a little play so not really economical.

It was fun when other ribbers saw the engine and decided they wanted to come alongside for a race, it would outrun most things! It attracted a lot of interest in the marina too as it had only just been released and no one had ever seen an engine of that size before. Fantastic engine. Yamaha have just released the new F225, F250 and F300 on a much lighter 4.2 litre V6 unit which is a really nice unit with a funky single large colour display for the engine gauges.

I was looking at that engine at Ribex earlier in the year - looked superb. The F300 was interesting too....

Hi,

Yeah, the new F300 is going to be a really nice engine, so much lighter than the previous V8 F300. Did you see the new 5” colour LCD display to replace the standard mono LCD gauges?

No, I didn't see those.

I'm credit-crunched beyond comprehension at the moment, so no more toys are allowed. Please don't post pics of them. smile

Ok,

Here is the old company "toy!"

I say toy, it was our demo boat, and very nice it was too.

Lovely. A feckin' rocket with that on the back I should think.

Actually, while we're on... a mate of mine is after a 7.5m rib and has about £40k to spend. What's he going to get for that sort of cash?

Lots of choice for that sort of money really. A recent Cobra 7.5m with a Yamaha F250 would be a good choice, nice cruiser, comfortable and quick. The one pictured above is the Cobra 8.6 with the optional aft cave locker and sundeck and bow sundeck. An earlier one of these may be within reach, but it's too big to trailer really, and the F300/F350 is going to use a lot more fuel than the F225/F250.

You could look at the Ribeye 785 but it's a different boat to the Cobra so it depends on what sort of a RIB he wanted and what he wanted to use it for. There's obviously the racing style hulls like Phantom, Scorpion and the likes. Good sea boats, very quick but not to everyones taste and not as practical as something like the Cobra. Ribtec do a nice 740 but there's not many of these around so they're difficult to come by.

If it was my money, I think I'd try to find a nice late Cobra 7.5 with the Yamaha F250 and good electronics package. It's a nice all-round boat, good cruiser, quick and capable. It has nice deep seating at the stern too so good for small children and those who aren't so comfortable on the water. I haven't got anything in at moment to suit, just an older Cobra 7.5m with a two stroke Mercury 200hp which is much cheaper, so probably not what they're after.
