Is there a reason, beyond its a nice place, that all these superyachts come to Barcelona?

Fuel and supplies likely, just the shear scale of the amount required.

I thought they liked to use Gibraltar for fuel due to the tax scenario there.

Once you've fuelled at Gib it's an easy stop-off at Barca for a nice, luxurious metropolis with a busy international airport too. Not that the owners of mega-yachts would care, but maybe crew+guests would?

Previously Larry Ellison, American Billionaire however has since sold it to a South American Banker.

He had a 458 speciale and supercharged Range Rover on the dock last year , going to wander up today and see what toys he has this year.

Dilbar has the biggest pool of any superyacht. Not surprising given she is the biggest yacht in the world in terms of volume.

Some of these yachts look UGLY.
Look like cruise liners. Especially the larger ones. The smaller ones look more "sporty" (for want of a better word) and more sexy.
Some of the larger ones look like floating hospitals.

Points to Katara, above. Just nasty looking thing (Ferry anyone). Harts new expedition yacht is my favourite.

Question:

I think I remember these vast yachts tend to be approved for only 12 guests for some reason to do with licensing / regulations / SOLAS ?

Is that rule respected? 12 guests on one of these could walk around all day and only very occasionally see each other.

If you are at anchor or berthed alongside, is there any (imposed) limit to the number of people who can be on board?

It's down to coding, if you go more than 12 passengers you leave the Large Commercial Yachts class and head into passenger ships, which will mean having all sorts of extra gear, lifeboats etc.

12 passengers + crew. You will find a lot of temporary crew members.

In 2010 the 12 pax thing got reviewed.previously any yacht with more than 12 Oaxaca was classed a passenger vessel and had to not only carry much more equipment but the design of the yacht wAs also compromised. Safety first and all that
