A wander around Puerto Banus harbour is enough to realise there's a whole different world of wealth out there!
Having just returned from there, there are indeed some fantastic yachts moored up at the moment.

The Azteca is rather stand out

Sidetracking slightly, would anyone know very roughly how much a small yacht, maybe 50-60ft would cost to run in terms of fuel, and how much moorings would be in the med? At the very start of my journey to owning, so have absolutely zero idea of costs involved, or even legalities of traveling around the open waters!
Piece of string question TBH.

Fuel, how much cruising do you want to do?

Mooring, where do you want to moor? Mallorca as an example, Alcudia you could buy a 60ft mooring for ~£70k, Puerto Portals would mutilply that by 6-8 times.

And actually, that captain of industry who has been so honoured in the press recently, Mr (Sir) Phil Green, his new boat Lionheart looks fantastic too.
I'm not a fan. Looks too fussy and like a massive floating training shoe to me.

The owner is a complete as well

That has the aesthetics of a £300k speedboat. Why on earth do they do that.
Looks absolutely fine to me
Îd rest my case on your comment. Fine doesn't cut it. Even for the mega wealthy this us a very important buy. Lacks any imagination. Plastic crap essentially. Many other lively yachts but not this one
And your credentials for coming to the conclusion that this is plastic crap?
Are they professional or your own personal opinion?

Living in Oman Said, the sultans boat was always in residence... formally one of the top 4 I think... rumours surrounding his new boat on order are he wants to be back near the top... Also around the Abu dhabi grand prix.. was on a 64 footer... but some of the boats there are quite pretty... Does anyone know if the Boat "Abu Dhabi" is finished? thought that was going to be pretty epic?

Also swam around the Sultan of Brunei's boat of Formentura back in 2003... that was of decent proportions!

My local Devon newspaper mentioned the Aga Khan's boat being in Plymouth recently, they said it would do 57knots.....this is a 200+ foot boat, surely a mistake, if it true I dread to think of how many tons per hour in fuel usage

Took it from the wiki page - 7 DOES sound a lot more realistic!

Curiously, I've just seen it spotted elsewhere in this thread under her new name.

Just to give you a rough idea - I have a 53 ft Sunseeker and my average over a season is 0.6mpg but the fuel costs are not the major outlay. Servicing, maintenance and mooring are not cheap( mooring costs will vary enormously depending where you want to base the boat) and every winter I sit and look at the bills and think that I must be mad, but summer comes and sitting at anchor in a bay in the Balearics makes it all seem worthwhile!

Boating is one of the last freedoms and if you are a British citizen there is no official licensing requirement although it would be sensible to get some training and at the very least get an ICC and a VHF licence. Modern boats are relatively easy to operate, even at 50/60 ft length, because of all the electronics.

I have heard (a few times) that one should expect to spend about 10% of the purchase cost every year on running costs. Would that be about right?

No way. I can think of two that I know the operating budgets for and they are both much less than the 10% sale price.

Living in Copenhagen, home of the worlds biggest shipping company brings some really contrasting boats into the harbour.

Abramovich has been here, as well as exclusive cruise ships, one of them a converted ice breaker as well as the Military looking gin palace of an Ex micrsoft director of development. Most of these plastic gin palaces are highly underwhelming though.

Of course Maersk brought a Triple EEE ship to Copenhagen. A trully huge vessel.
The Queen has a lovely, old school yacht.

Of the modern boats, of the "nicest" is on the right in the photo. A sleek and elegant double masted sailing yacht. I'll have the one on the right please Bob.

The queen's yacht (assuming that is the one on the second photo down) is beautiful. I know there are many crimes people want to lay at his door, but to me one of Tony Blair's biggest was getting rid of HMY Britannia.

As a sad story - and I'm going to keep direct names and relations out of it for hopefully understandable reasons:

An immediate relative of mine was on the board of a company and friends with the son of a Super Yacht builder. He (the son) was the owner of one of the yachts - 85m, fuel capacity of 250k litres and a range of 70k miles.

His father was killed in the mumbai hotel terrorist attacks and everything was sold. The name lives on as a charter company. The yacht in question was sold for 85m gbp and refurbished / renamed in 2012.

Forgive me for being so vague - I hope you can understand the sensitivity. The yacht has its own wiki page and I have the charter brochure for her somewhere at home. She was offered to my sister and I as a wedding reception venue should either of us happen to get married - having looked at the charter brochure, that was a rather generous offer..!

I do love yachts but gosh I'm not sure I could swallow the ownership cost. A wander around Puerto Banus harbour is enough to realise there's a whole different world of wealth out there!
70K range is incorrect, i know the yacht you are referring to and AL not has a 60m Benetti, i was the FO on the build.
