Does she have a normal displacement hull? The flow dynamics for that speed are amazing, sorry if you are not allowed to answer, is her keel a lifting one or is her hull designed not only for speed but also conservation of energy?

She has a fixed keel. The whole hull shape, including the bow, was designed to give the optimum flow dynamics. If we don't need to generate energy we feather the screws full back to give absolute minimum drag.

Thanks for answering, I thought she had serous hull design due to the bow covering when she was rolled out of the shed.

Thank you for highlighting how she has been used to investigate what is possible with a yacht and an open cheque.

20 Knots is certainly impressive - and thank you for spending time on here to answer our questions.

Speculatore- I’m sure you’ve already said, but are you on board now?

Testing or overseeing?

My boss (Owners Rep and Project Manager) is onboard doing the technical stuff. As the 'Designated Person Ashore' (DPA) my role is to provide shore support, particularly in the event of an incident. I am currently in Gibraltar waiting for the yacht to arrive so I can deliver the 'Certificate of British Registry' which is the yacht 'Passport' and other important insurance documentation.

Did anyone see the documentary on More4 last night "Million Pound Mega Yachts"? Aside from the misleading title (I think £20m (and that was secondhand) was the cheapest featured), it was a fascinating insight into a very different world.

hehe Yes, quite misleading. A million pounds would barely keep us running for a month. It is a different world.

Pah! Wouldn’t keep US running for a fortnight! wink

I try to give a scale to it all when friends or family ask about my work but no one really gets it, even if they think they do - i never got it until I’d spent a good while in amongst it.

What infuriates me the most about ‘the industry’ (sorry, hate that term) is all the hangers on and the people who’ve never done a trip onboard a superyacht. These are generally the ones who write the most online, talk the most, tell everyone the most and on the most part, know the least. A few emails to a captain of a big boat and they consider themselves industry experts.

Couple that with the whoppers you meet onboard who consider themselves personal friends with the boss... as they pick the lumps of his turd out the bog brush with toothpicks. We’re all just reasonably insignificant components on what is a very very very rich persons TVR that sits in the garage ready to be used on weekends and sunny evenings.

Agreed, sadly it is often the clueless hangers-on that have the most influence. We had some of the cloggies come visit us recently and they admitted that nobody in their design teams had ever worked on a yacht. No wonder they make such obvious mistakes so often. At least, it is nice that is now being recognised.

Still, you know what they say, wooden shoes, wooden listen.

As for the cost, you kind of become numb to it after a while, but then every now and then you suddenly think, hang on, the quote to varnish this table would pay my kids school fees for the next ten years.

A couple of years back an Apple iOS update meant iPhones wouldn’t stay connected to our WiFi due to technical reasons beyond my understanding. Apple weren’t interested so the solution? Change nearly 100 access points to a different brand. A quarter million EUR modification all because of an Apple update! hehe

It really is a different world.

I saw it, it's been on before but as europa1 said, it's an interesting world to see for those of us who are outside it. There was a quick mention during the tour of Solandge about having to find a million a year to run it, the 220,000 litre fuel tanks and so on.

Not as irritating as some of the "look how nice the rich have it" programmes have been, by a long way.

As a general guide the 'Very Rich' work on a scale of '400'. For example, if you put £1 in a charity box you class it is a small donation. The scale of 400 means that a 'Rich Person' would put £400 in the tin. Give a Taxi driver a £3 pound tip = £1200 tip...

Somehow the looks are trying to grow on me. I guess my brain is programmed to think of sail boats differently and it's slowly coming round to the idea of a modern sailboat.

Speaking of which I'm assuming Black Pearl will pitch over at some quite wild angles when at full sail, is there anything done to counter this at all? Also seeing as it's sort of a sailboat cum luxury yacht, just how comfortable is it for passengers when it's tilted over at full sail? Could I still sit down for afternoon tea comfortably for instance?
