How about a ‘modern’ J for about half the price of the Spirit.

Built from modern materials to the class regs, so eligible for some of the most exclusive regattas in sailing... though you’d need another small fortune for permanent crew and another to hire more crew to race her.
Endeavour was up for sale a few years back at €17.5m.
That’s lovely! There’s just something about these large classic style yachts. Lots of want!!https://www.ypiyachts.com/en/luxury-yacht-for-sale...

A few mates of mine campaign TP52's and they recon just the one-off costs of a single regatta for one is $30 - 50k with sails, crew, flights, entry fees, (local) delivery costs etc. and thats before you have even added on the routine annual stuff.
can probably add zero's to that figure for a J.
Seems a million a year is about the starting point for J running costs...

£3m a year (rounding up for inflation) seems quite cheap compared to what you might spend blasting around in a £20m motor yacht, no?
I got the impression it was effectively £3M a year for owning it and her doing nothing... I am however picturing the most epically beautiful houseboat sat in the Hamble for decades!
i would imagine to be competitive a full new suit of sails would be needed for each regatta due to stretch knackering performance, you may as well re-do all the running rigging at the same time as you don't want any breakages .... then you need to get some guns for hire to grind winches and be rail meat, plus some lovelies to sit in bikini's on the aft deck. you need a decent support boat to eat caviar and sip champaign on after a days racing, a few rib's as tenders (and all teh crew that they need). Then you need the boat delivered to your regatta, the entry fee and insurance.
and thats not including regular running costs and maintenance ....
and assuming that there are no expensive noises or moments .....
its actually ball achingly expensive when you start to add it all up .... and thats just for a 1 week regatta ...... do 10 of them in a year ....

Some of them might be over 80 years old, but they’ll all be running modern laminated sails when racing, which don’t stretch. They’ll have another suit of sails for cruising. Rigging will all be modern - carbon mast/boom/rigging.
There’s probably no more than 2 or 3 regattas a year for J’s, and they only race in a limited weather window, so don’t need a massive number of sails... main, no.1, stay sail, code zero, 2 or 3 asymmetrics, 3 or 4 kites. The downwind sails will get replaced more often, and are more prone to damage... blow a kite and you’re looking at six figures for a new one.
The racing main and head sails will last for years with the limited use they’ll get. Which is a good job as a full suit of racing sails for a J will cost will well in to 7 figures. All the winches are massive (3ft across) and are all electric/hydraulic... no grinding.
For racing they’ll bring in an all star crew... ex America’s Cup/Olympians/VOR... the same core crew for each regatta. All travel and living expenses paid and a ‘salary’ for the top boys. J’s race with 20+ crew who actually have a proper role (ie aren’t just rail weight or guests), so big money here.
Even the crew uniforms will cost huge sums... enough of every item of clothing for 30-40 people of varying shapes and sizes.
All the race equipment gets shipped from race to race in multiple containers. 3 or 4 days work to change the boat from cruising spec to race spec.
I’d think most of the owners probably have motor yachts that would qualify for this thread title as well

Another from Spirit and well under thread minimum (though I think the thread is flexible for interesting stuff). I bloody love this. Until last week I had not heard of Spirit, not being very nautical, but I'm pleased to see the company is in Ipswich.
I think you keep missing my posts as I’ve posted both of the videos already of the spirit vessels....Gassing Station | Boats, Planes & Trains | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
