Where was the foam?

Is it normal for the pilot to request it?

People get the reason for the foam wrong all the time. Its not for the aircraft. It's for the landing after-party.

I was aware of some of that story.

It really annoys me that so many people today think that US rocketry was essentially all based on German technology acquired at the end of World War 2. The story of Malina and the JPL shows that this was anything but true. There was also a US Navy rocket research lab run by Robert Truax. America in its own right did a lot of work into the development of rocket technology.
