I guess the RN will jailbreak them then. hehe

As much as I don't think a lot of the Super Hornet for many different reasons I think this is a sensible move and I'd prefer to see a proper aircraft carrier in the Navy again.

I think they are too far gone along to cancel but perhaps more pressure to cut costs in a different way to safeguard other spending projects and procurement.

Cammel Laird only today has started to put together the sections of HMS Queen Elizabeth.

To many British jobs involved now to cancel.

Slightly off topic but worth posting. Artists Impression of HMS Queen Elizabeth leaving Portsmouth.

And HMS Vanguard running aground at the same place leaving Portsmouth in 1960 on it's to the scrap yard. It didn't want to go. Also shows just how big Vanguard was.

Quite an apt image, because the way things are going, the Carrier will be the only ship left in the RN. No escorts, no submarines, nothing!

Trying not to get misty eyed at the sight of the, not so old Vanguard, being towed off to the scrappers...

But, buying the SH (or even the Rafale or a Sea Gripen) has always been the logical choice IMHO over the pointless F-35B.

RN sqns can deploy as shore based assets when carrier is in dock, just as the FAA sqns used to do in the old days of fixed wing air years ago.

SH can always be part-ex'd for F-35C buy at a later date if affordable further down the line.

i think the politics of the situation means this can never happen, and if we get the F-35 it will be the B... with RR making the lift fan etc it just seems that it will be difficult for the UK govt to sacrifice UK jobs at RR...

If the US bean-counters pull the plug on the alternate F136 engine program (the Gen Elec/RR version) which is still a possibility, especially as UK-PLC is talking about reduced number of a/c to order, then that will stuff RR regarless, as the only B version will be the F135 Pratt&Whitney engined one. The GE/RR engine version hasn't even flown yet, and isn't scheduled to do so for another year or two.

I think its an attempt to twist their arm into giving us more for our money or somesuch. If you dont give us what we want we will run to Boeing.

No... simply economics. The B is going to be the most expensive, least effective, military a/c ever, and we can't afford it, and frankly don't need it.

Superbug buy would be much more logical, and more effective buy than the F-35B. From what I've read on pprune etc., there don't seem to be that many in the services that are actually pro-F-35B.

Oh I agree, F18Fs would be perfect for what we need, much better price and able to carry all the weapons it will need, is available now, crews can and are being trained in the US and Dave is completely unproven in any way shape or form, two engines on the superhornet is also a great advantage and like the RAAF we can use the Fs as Growlers.

I still fear that because it is the sensible choice that it is too good to be true. And the fact that Boeing is the big competitor to JSF seems rather convenient.

Although what other choice is there? None really.
