I was in a differant bay in the same hanger (doing vc10 majors) when this happened-raf st athan somtime in mid 2000's-there was lots of comotion and we all walked into this bay to see it sat there on its backside!the story was that nightshift had removed the tail trestle and the aircraft sat there happily untill next morning when somebody got on it and walked down the spine and it back it went.
Wasn't too much damage-two slightly bent tailerons and thrust reverser buckets.
It happened at the begining of a major maintenance input.
Everybody was taking pics on their phones and we all got warned about showing them to anyone-i would probally know who took this pic.

No Beaufighters, there was one at Duxford meant to be under rebuild to fly but suitable engines couldn't be found.I think there are a few P47s though.
Pessimism about a return to flight, it seems, based on lack of suitable Bristol Hercules engines...

...and a madman in NZ who has a running Hercules...

It seems far more likely that one of the Southern Hemisphere Beaus will fly than the Duxford aircraft at the moment...

I think you'd have to be brave, even if it was possible. I believe the handling of the Merlin engine Beaus was 'interesting'.
I'd have thought P&W R2800 or Wright R2600 would be a better bet than Merlins, certainly a lot more airworthy ones available than Bristols. There genuinely were Merlin powered variant of the Beaufighter - as my picture shows - the Mark II.
The problem with the Bristol radials such as the Hercules and Centaurus is that they were immensely complex with sleeve valves and there are very few running versions left.
The Varsity isn't in the top left apron, its over on the right
Top left
Britannia, Comet, Belfast, VC10, C130, Hastings, Beverley
Top right
Wellington, Mosquito, Lancaster, Canberra, Dominie, Gnat, Jet Provost, Piston Provost, Varsity
Foreground left
Gazelle, Devon, Pembroke, Devon, Auster, Lysander, Tiger Moth, Magister, Lightning T4, Javelin, Hunter, Whirlwind (over head) Vampire, Meteor, Tempest, Beaufighter, Defiant, Spitfire
I am not sure if there's supposed to be a Chipmunk behind the Pembroke, is that a dH tail back there on the corner?
edit for mistyped Tiger Moth
