Am I sad for being more excited at immediately recognising the location in this pic ( M6 a few miles south of Tebay ) than I am at the Typhoon ? biggrin

Using a very long static drogue (UK style one not the more shorter steerable US style you get on USAF KC-135s) Just in case.

"The westbound carriageway of the M55 was only a third of the width of the runway at our aerodrome in nearby Warton."

Ironic that a lot of the hardcore used to build the M55 came from digging up the runways at nearby RNAS Inskip frown

A mate took this photo at his work (not hard to guess with who or where...). For an old design, they still look great IMHO.

The M55 was still being built when it was done. They were just about to build the last bridge on the straightest bit so the opportunity was there to do a bit of showing off.

Operating off motorways was normal for Swedish Viggens and Drakens.

I work right next door to RAF Henlow. The A507 which bypasses some of the villages nearby is straight, I mean Roman style straight.

Is this a coincidence or were their plans in place to use roads as runways if it all went tits up?

Yes - other photos of the event show the bridge over which it went which is recognisable as the B5260 from Weeton

Still I look at it this way

Re: the Jags OFF motorways issue, I was looking at the first and second pictures. Empty pylons on the first one and quite a half decent war load on the second.
