What's wrong with missiles?
Missiles can be defeated with countermeasures and / or good tactical flying. They are also not hugely great against ultra low flying targets.

It's pretty difficult to defeat a guns solution.

You would need to be a pretty good shot to keep a jinking Spitfire in your gun sight as you close at, what, 600 knots?
(not sure what the lowest speed a Lightning can fly at...?)

I'm not sure the closure rate would be that high, certainly no higher than going up against a say a Tu95. Also, don't forget that the Lightning had a radar predicting gunsight.

Come to think of it, there was a time in the late seventies when it looked quite likely that Royal Navy F4s might meet Mustangs in combat over Belize.
Buccaneers, quit apt given the location. Pirates ahoy.

Fantastic photos! Well done.

The desert scheme looks ace: very photogenic. It's a shame all combat planes the world over seem to be grey nowadays.

As for the lower shot, the residents of that house must be deafened!

Was also at Farnborough last year, Eric, surprised you did not see it?

Missed that one.

Even though I spend too much time during Farnborough show week looking at the aeroplanes, i still don't get to see them all.

That looks farm-like; were the aircraft scaring the livestock? That can have a major impact on productivity of eggs or milk, for example.

Looks different to me

wink

I've a nephew, ex-RN who lives in Shropshire near Tern Hill

Every time one of the helicopter school machines flies over he does that oh too tedious "ps off Biggles" (Crabs is an alternative insult)

He stopped when I asked him where RN helo pilots train...

Great Tornado pictures, I wonder how many parts off other machines would account for the grey one's patchwork appearance

Probably just painted last time it was in for a major service. Panels will come off, be inspected and repaired which often involves a repaint. The aircraft itself doesn't get painted so you end up with a patchwork of newly painted panels on an old faded airframe.

I figured they were removeable panels which would be taken off the aircraft and painted separately
