...2018 RAF Centenary celebrations...
Tell me more: is there a, for want of a better word, flagship event for this?

I think the Air Tattoo at Fairford will contain the main celebrations.

The RAF Museum at Hendon is being revamped in order to be ready for the actual 100th Anniversary date, 1 April 2018

Both replicas I would assume since XS921 is in the North Sea fifty miles off Flamborough Head at the moment.

There's also going to be a big airshow at Cosford, with a static lineup in which Black Mike will be starring

Makes me feel ancient. I was only just born when the last RAF Mosquitos and Lincolns were retired

With a little bit of historical context http://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/news/13598026...

Does that work? If not, it's a story about Craig Pence who ejected from XS921 unveiling the gate guardian. He was Test Pilot at BAES for many years doing lot of work on Typhoon, before another ejection (from a Hunter this time) meant he couldn't fly on ejection seats again, so he went to work on Lightning II so full circle.

603 miles in 47 minutes is just 770mph, was it running on just one engine?

I imagine that, being over land, they were flying as close as possible to the sound barrier without breaking it
