That's interesting looking... what is it and what's the under belly bulge for?

It's a Sentinel R1 (based upon a Bombadier Global Express).

The bulge is a sideways looking radar.

First operational Sentinel sortie was 2009.

Having no wish to sound rude, but those posts are 4 minutes apart. The 4 minutes it took for me to find and copy some links for an interested party who asked a question.

I frequently have more than one tab open when perusing PistonHeads, so I'm not always aware that someone else has added to a thread when I respond. As was the case here.

Furthermore, echo or no echo? Which is better? At least we both gave the same answer, unlike in many threads where the actual accurate answer gets buried in a flurry of wild guesses and stabs in the dark.

Some more stuff on the Sentinel here... https://ukdefencejournal.org.uk/raf-scrap-sentinel...

...which I read as "one aircraft to be 'scrapped' (reduced to parts, to maintain the 4 retained airframes a better way to phrase it, maybe?) and the remaining 4 aircraft not expected to have their service life extended". Whatever the case, it's a sensationalist headline and a poorly worded piece, IMHO...

Thanks both.

I know nothing about aircraft, but am always interested - lots of knowledge on here.

Sorry if you took offence to my wee joke.

Sentinel came in as an OR (Operational Requirement) to effectively fullfill the Army's ASTOR (Airborne Standoff Radar) requirement, which itself came about from observing how effective the US JSTARS (Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System) had been in GW1 and Bosnia.

Unfortunately Sentinel has had a bit of a rough ride with the Coalition Govt wanting to scrap it a mere year after it entered operational service. However the system provides a high class reconnaissance capability (as proven during Op Elllamy [Libya] in 2011 and Mali in 2013).

Whether they will break one for parts or just bin an airframe I don't know. Either way it's just more salami slicing in the Defence budget.

As usual the bean counters know the cost of everything but the value of nothing.

F-111 full loadout - though as the outer four pylons were non-swivelling this loadout would bean the mission would be strictly subsonic with wings fully forward

I'm guessing that's why the poster said "about" 10 years ago.

That actually makes a lot of sense , containerization for aircraft, want to carry people, fit the passenger box, refueling plane fit the fuel box, AEW box, Intel box, AEW, the possibilities are endless.

Now that's just asking for a tailstrike.

Ahh, the sound of the MRD running most of the night with the Corporal Sooty pushing the bowser backwards for fun!
