Framed photograph in the pub adjacent to the Premier Inn at Thetford (near RAF Lakenheath). Oops.

This Lakenheath "F15" is actually an F16 from Spangdahlem, Germany.

...it's an easy mistake to make. Three wheels, a sidewinder, American. I dunno what the fuss is all about. Bloody plane-spotter pedants, eh? rolleyes

And while I can forgive the reflections of the room lighting, what is going on with that fly above the starboard wing? Is it on the glass, or inside the frame? And is it a really big picture, or quite a small fly? I do hope it isn't trapped in your camera lens! wink

It reminds me of this comment by Israel Shamir that the Americans have this trend to name their helicopters after the tribes they have exterminated (comanches, Sioux, Apache) ... Have the Germans named their tanks this way?

Back on the Disney's stuff used by warring parties, here are a few nice one from the Axis' side:

Galland. I guess everyone who has some knowledge of WWII Aviation would know him anyway.

Carganico. Just discovered it.

150 Assalto. The italians.

Vic's Viking Garage in Johannesburg. Some of you may have heard of it, some not. It used to have a Vickers Viking sitting on top of it but since 1987 it's had an Avro Shackleton testing the roof strength.

Nice to see that the Viking is in good hands and being restored.

Avro Shackleton
Was it only the Shackleton that was referred to as "1000 rivets flying in close formation", or was that used for other aircraft ? I first heard it from early Nimrod crews.

10,000 rivets fling in close formation. wink

And yes, just the Shacklebomber.

8 Sqn had the motto: "Four screws are better than 2 blow jobs!"

I always think it's ironic that one of Britain's main bombers at the start of WW2 was named after a German town.

Piper also went down the North American Indian route for naming their aircraft.

As long as we are being pedants, that is an F-15E of the 494th FS, not an F-15C of the 493rd FS.

Try finding a picture of an F-15 (any model of F-15) taken at a similar angle to that F-16 though. I tried a few Google searches and that angle was the best I could come up with.

For security reasons I was forbidden from taking the best photograph I ever composed. An F-15 chained down on the engine test pad at Al Udeid Air Base, at night, at full throttle with those concentric blue rings in the exhaust flame. The most impressive demonstration of raw engine power I've ever personally witnessed. Airside photography was forbidden save for those employed by various air forces as photographers to document operations.

Lakenheath F15C (single seater) - the Strike Eagles are 2 seaters and carry the conformal scab on fuel tanks.

Someone local to Thetford shut print that off and sellotape it over the photo in the pub.

It's quite good, but...

[pedant mode] ...the altitude is too great. [/pedant mode]

wink

(plus I'm annoyed that I didn't find that shot when I looked... frown )
