Old Rolling Stock still in service!
Discussion
I hadn't appreciated just how good the new stuff was over this. I remember thinking this was good 15 years ago. And I thought the line had been improved as well. It appears the new trains deal with the lumps and bumps much better. And smell less like a public urinal.
Still it could be worse. I could be walking.

Does rather depend on the condition of the coaches - if they've been refurbished they are quite nice. It's also fun to hang your head out of the window at full speed.
On the Great Western all of the Voyagers were ditched and replaced with HSTs because nobody liked the under-floor engines.

Interestingly enough (?) there is talk of the Irish Rail MK3's being brought back to work over here. They'd need re-gauging and extensive internal refurbishment (interior and electrics) but apparently there is a strong business case for it.
Additionally, the HST and loco hauled MK3's are quite different (with regards to electrics etc) and cannot be intermixed. Cross County and Grand Central performed major refurbishment including reportedly replacement of all electrical systems in the MK3's they converted from loco hauled to HST.
It's really nice to see the rakes of blue and grey MK2's and 3's nowadays.

The one I was in appeared to be standard Black/red Virgin colours on the outside. And someone had been through and fitted 24v plug sockets under every table. A lot of the rest of the inside was very blue though.Additionally, the HST and loco hauled MK3's are quite different (with regards to electrics etc) and cannot be intermixed. I see them most days on my way to work at the Willesden Depot. The old BR colours were so much prettier than anything new. Also see the Pretendelino the OP is talking about parked up from time to time.
Not a train buff but those new PenduLeano things smell like festival toilets and seem very small inside. Hang your jacket up and it's dangling in front of your nose, presumably they are not parallel sided so they they have clearance to lean?
Headphone jack never works, heating is always far too high, never enough seats.

shouldn't this be posted on "Gricers and Traction Bashers Anonymous" rather than PH ...

Even though we've never met, I think of you when I see the Taunton - Cardiff service go by in the mornings, four Mark 3 coaches top and tailed with a couple of Class 47s.
That's my home from home that. It's not 47s, it would've been either be 57s or 67s. 57s don't run on that anymore as they lost the contract due to poor running.
The superior 67s have taken over.
Shame it's not English Electric though!
EDIT: whilst I remember, they're Mark 2s not 3s.

On Southern we got shot of the 1970's EMU stock, 'cos it was all slam door, and had nice new Electrostars instead wiv aircon 'n everythink. Even the yobs don't abuse them too badly, built-in CCTV must help though.
With the Olympics coming up some are being sent off to London (can't have athletics fans from abroad being transported in anything old) so Boris is sending us his rubbish from the 70's in return. No loos and no aircon - just a change of livery.

Virgin seem to use Mk3s as replacements for knackered Pendos / Voyagers - I often see them about.
Some BR livery ones (may be Mk2s) sat near a depot on the outskirts of London....
Yup mentioned them above, they're Wrexham and Shropshire stock I think. There's also an old school Network Southeast livered loco that sits there most days. Some BR livery ones (may be Mk2s) sat near a depot on the outskirts of London....
