Seems odd to go to all that trouble and not have an artificial horizon at the end of it.

I am going to fetch it from my cabinet of interesting things and photograph it. Its a breathtaking bit of complexity and we have run it up and its almost impossible to hold it and move your hand when its up to speed.

The 3 phase generating part of the motor is the big puzzle, you point some power at one end of the motor and it powers up, but, out the other end of the motor is a set of connections that push out the power for the gyro which seem to be a different voltage and are three phase, its a motor/generator all in one.

I cannot describe this very well, I will fetch it and take a few pics.

AC use 28Vdc and 115Vac for instrumentation, I guess your gizmo is an inverter that uses battery voltage to generate 3 phase for a gyro or summat.

Does it look like this?

The motor/generator sounds like it is "just" an electric motor and a dynamo sharing a common axle. Won't be the most energy efficient thing in the world, but if you basically need DC or single phase for most of your electrical equipment, producing a bit of three phase this way seems reasonable.

No, it does not look like that but It looks like it might be the internals to something like that.

The gyro is exposed and the motor is separate.

Pics soon, I need to go and get it and stop reading the rest of PH !

'Automatic Pilot Inverter' seems a misnomer to me...!

But why do you need three-phase to spin a gyro?

Ok, here it is, The Gyro/motor thing:

The only number or marks are "34137" on the outer edge of the bit that spins.
