Because of a shortage of traction GBRf has had to hire in a classic Deltic (55022, Royal Scots Grey) to run the Blyth - Lynemouth alumina train. I hope other rail companys start doing this during the shortage, I'd be great to see the old girls running again over the mainlines.

Wow! saw one of those on the Nene Valley Railway the year before last when out cycling in Ferry Meadows.
A friend of my Parents had half a Deltic in their back garden for a while!

I've been following this on a few of the rail forums.

Fantastic loco and hope it's looked after.

Awesome stuff, I'd love to go and see it in operation.

How long is it on lease for? Where would be the best place and time to see it?

Info from rail express,

The hire of the EE type 5 , which is as a result of a recent increase in business leading to a motive power shortage, is expected to last until early July. However, the loco is due to return to the ELR in order to take part in the 50th anniversary event on April 22nd - 25th and will also be paying visits to scotland for SRPS duties during weekends in May and June.

55022 is booked to work two trips from North Blyth to Lynemouth and back on weekdays, timings of which are as follows:

6N58# 06:00 North Blyth - Lynemouth (arr 06:38)
6N51 10:50 Lynemouth - North Blyth (arr 12:14)
6N32 15:03 Lynemouth - North Blyth (arr 15:37)
6N69 17:54 North Blyth - Lynemouth (arr 18:32)

It's so shiny though - I bet all the regular mainline drivers feel a bit ashamed when that goes by.

Fantastic! Love the incongruity of it, it's like a Bentley hauling a plant hire trailer. Did no-one have a 37 with a mainline ticket available? Is this the first time a Deltic has hauled freight?

By the looks of it the throttle was opened going over a set of points.

Poor driving technique, increased chances of a traction motor flash over?

Hmm, have a friend who is a manager at Alcan Lynemouth, I'll see if I can get some pictures if of it there if the Deltic is still running.

rubbish !
heavy train with a high geared loco , leaving a speed restriction and starting up a hill !
when should he get the power on ?

Quite simple, power should be applied after the set of points.

A 'heavy train' will have enough momentum to carry it across the given set of points.

Have you ever seen or repaired a flashover?

Its a lovely looking thing but as not much of a rail expert myself curiousity requires me to ask the question - where would they have hired a classic engine from?
Also would it have the required safety tickets if its been plying its trade in a private collection for any length of time - guess that to be used away from private lines on the mainlines these things need the equivelant to an MOT?
Excuse my ignorance, but this intrigues me!
