What does "pave" mean?

As in Pave Low, Pave Hawk etc.

It's a Code Word used by the USAF as a prefix for various weapons designation, locating and targetting systems going back around 40 years. The systems can be very disparate in nature, some radar based, some laser based etc.

It is thought that the letters PAVE were an acronym for Precision Avionics Vectoring Equipment but with so many diverse devices having the prefix, I'm not so sure.

I wasn't expecting google to come up with such a straightforward answer but....

Wikipedia said:
The codeword PAVE is a U.S. Air Force program identifier relating to electronic systems. Use of the prefix identifier is sometimes thought to be an acronym, but the various acronyms proposed do not fit with the wide range of programs it is used to identify. The original system, used in helicopters (The PAVE Low and PAVE Hawk), stood for Precision Avionics Vectoring Equipment.

Slightly unrelated, but I didn't know that the Pave Low had been retired.

Nothing, it was just a code name for the orignal project and codenames are picked to have no resemblance to what the project involves.

Thanks again and apologies for the opportunistic thread hijack. I've been meaning to ask for ages.

The US Army operates about 1,400 Black Hawks (not including of course the naval and USAF variants) so yes, the Black Hawk is still very much in use!

That picture was created by someone on that militaryphotos.net forum as speculation as to what it might look like.

The early targeting pods carried by aircraft like the F-4 and the F-111 were PAVE KNIFE, PAVE SPIKE, etc.

Looking at that photo, and particularly the size of that tail rotor set up, it seems to me that the 'short' rotor blades are because the full size ones were sheared off during the crash when they hit the ground still rotating a 'n' thousand rpm.

The top two blades could be factory length maybe ? Is this the same tail piece that is shown resting against the wall in the news photos?

it was called 'have blue' as you could do as much blue on blue fire as you like and no one would be any the wiser as it was stealth.

"Have Blue, engaging anyway"

Facets and blended curves hints at stealth design. Would explain why they torched it.
