Unless it is a Sat/Sun (which I very much doubt), I'll not be able to make it till next year sadly!

We get back on the 8th. Don't want 30th November. Anywhere in between those sounds good.
Are we doing similar again (Thur/Friday) - presumably Martin won't want to be opening on Saturday for bottling.
Need to check on hotels again if working on the same principle - pour deux chien.
Although we are considering soon a shirt term hire of a caravanette to try before we buy.
Either option to sort as needed - I'll suss the hotels.
What about an airbnb? There might be a pet-friendly one in the area. If it was a large one several of us could share it.

Yes.

Long story short [snip]

IF it isn't found and we get a refund, I think we can still buy a new octave from WB with A.N.Other spirit - the ben nevis in particular is excellent. Or if anyone wants out i'm happy to take their share and give a refund - plus a bit of interest from me for not being dilligent enough in chasing.
I don’t suppose they’ve found it yet, have they Lefty?

I’m so annoyed, firstly that I was so lax that I didn’t get a share of any of the other casks wink , but also that we’ve waited so long for cask 8 already, for nothing! I’d certainly be up for reinvestment into a new cask (preferably a dark, peaty one)...

No idea, how I keep missing these things frown

Any distilleries out there that still do octaves? Just become a god father and think it would be a good gift to split with them (parents, not baby!).

I saw the Arran cask purchase, but its too many bottles and the duty & vat costs at the end put me off!

Lindores Abbey do some smaller casks, and also offer a possibility for 1/4 of a cask ownership.

I could ask for prices if people are interested? I just asked for some price estimates and can post them on here after, biggrin

https://lindoresabbeydistillery.com/welcome-lindor...

This is a recent article showing prices and what is on offer to give an idea on current availability.

May be worth just buying an octave from a cooper, giving it to the chaps at Whisky Brokers and getting them to fill it with whatever they've got in; our refills last year worked out at about £170 per octave for Ben Nevis, an obscure but very pleasant malt(obviously warehousing, duty and bottling on top of that, but most of that cost is not until you decide to bottle).

Alternatively just give whisky brokers a call and let them sort out the cask as well. Last time I looked at their spreadsheet of what they had in they had Ardmore, Ben Nevis, Dailuaine, Girvan, Glen Moray, Glenshiel, Newmake Islands Malt, Invergordon, Macduff, North British, Glenrothes, Strathdearn, Strathenry and Tullibardine.

We too opted for some Ben Nevis.

Got a reply from Lindores. They have these options which is the cost of maturation and insurance for 10 years.

Using the information below I think it would be £660 in tax for a 55l sherry Firkin/octave cask (assuming 50l after 10 years - just a quick guess), plus £1350. Which would be around £2310. If it is 50l at end then is 71 bottles, so £32 a bottle? Seems a bit cheap? Although maybe correct if they mention £30-40 a bottle in the all inclusive line below.

They will sell 5000 litres for private casks in the year, likely released around May next year.

Anyone interested? Or say if you know a better option. Seems to be more expensive than the equivalent from some other distilleries, but benefit is you can get small casks whereas seems like a lot of others don't offer it. Plus relatively rare in terms of the amount of spirit provided to the public for single casks, compared to some others.

Also they say this:
For an annual fee you can keep your cask in the warehouse to mature longer
You can pay the tax and VAT to HMRC on the cask and take it away, as a potential cask owner please be aware that you still have to pay tax (currently £28.74 per litre of pure alcohol and VAT at 20%) so in layman’s terms a 195ltr Bourbon cask after 10 years will require a tax payment of approx. £2600 also to be included is VAT.

You can ask Lindores to bottle the cask for you at an approx.. all inclusive cost of somewhere between £30-£40 depending on tax/materials at that time.

For no further cost to you, we can bottle 1/3rd of the cask at an agreed strength and Lindores keep the remaining 2/3rd’s, this on a bourbon 195ltr cask at 40%abv works out at £36 per bottle.

What’s the collective thoughts on the original casks?

I’m in no rush at all but how long do we plan on leaving them before bottling?

The 2nd anniversary of the first tasting/bottling sesh comes up in February; anyone fancy a repeat? The remaining casks are likely ready for it by now, best not let the angels take more than they're due! lick

I'd love to repeat the tasting/bottling.
If I could chose I'd go for mid to late March but would love to see everyone again and visit/sample/bottle the casks.
Just let me know when - I'm in !

Hi guys - not been on PH much in recent months - other priorities. I did mention before that we need to get bottling before warmer weather came this year.

Sitting with my newly arrived Ardbeg Drum makes me think I need a nice rum dram - the Drum is so short in its finish - and from our previous get together I recall how our own maturing Rum octave was my favourite.
And ConeyhurstBlue's mega shares in Port will be fleaing with the angels. But I think there will be a bit left.

So Baron Lefty and guys - how are we all fixed ?

And if any of you don't follow Martins WhiskyBroker page on Facebook he has had some interesting bottlings of late - if he has any left. And some very full warehouses compared to when we were there before which was just over two years ago now - a stressful time with the puppy we brought home from Dumfries on the last trip !

Clearly there are a few folks to consider - especially the Baron.
I'm guessing the Martiin is still only open on weekdays, although his staff count appears to have increased greatly in the last year.
We are away on that first weekend in April - but the Thursday/Friday on that week may work as we are due to go somewhere half way home.
Equally we have Easter in April which may be both a positive and negative - might have to get a date set soonest if that's the preferred one due to accommodation.
