April really busy for me unfortunately - but any time after that May/June ?
Wk beginning 6th May ?
Very keen to repeat a tasting/tour bottling trip - such good fun last time.
Come on everyone let’s get something booked.
Yes - it should be a good trip for you - 30% of one from memory.Wk beginning 6th May ?

If it goes into May - any time earlier as we have our first ever trip to Feis Ile this year at the end of the month.
You are right I have 2 shares in the port cask - yum yum.
Incidentally I was looking back through the thread last night and the Port Cask was filled on the 10th May 2012 if we bottled that first week in May 2019 it would be almost exactly 7yrs old.
Anyone up for a tour/tasking/bottling ?
I'm not sure how much longer we would want to leave the casks to be honest - I have heard some terrible stories about the angels taking far more than is fair, and we all know that because the cask is smaller it doesn't take as long to mature ?
In contrast though I did read about a cask producing 65 700ml bottles at 7 years.

I have been in contact with Lefty, as like me he hasn't been that active in PH of late. He will pop up soon but he's been, and remains, quite busy.
Assuming that Martin would still require a weekday visit, this is probably going to be out for Lefty - weekends only. Lefty has suggested that we could get the samples drawn and arrange to meet at a mutually agreed location one weekend. This may suit others better anyway ? But where - still near Martin ? May seem a bit remote rather than central but there is AD Rattray. Annandale Distillery is nearer civilisation. Nearer Glasgow there is Artisan Restaurant and Derek Mather's world record whisky collection. All these are still in Scotland. Bearing in mind we have people from Aberdeen and people from Brighton - and potentially one weekend ! I could suggest Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery but that would be a personal cheat.
What seems very important is that the Port, amongst others, will be 7 years old - unbelievable. Originally the point was that at 5 the casks would be more than ready. And hence why we shouldn't be looking at putting the whisky through another active summer, or not without some serious insight.
Bring on the ideas - its going to be a compromise - but good to involve as many as possible in this journey. Dare I even suggest we allow Martins nose to make our decision and just bottle as necessary - but that would be missing the point. I know some of you have only got a share in one or two casks whereas a small hardcore have been privileged to be involved throughout - even in the missing cask.

A weekend is easier for me as well, but maybe isn’t quite the same, but then the octaves are not at the original distillery anyway.
Somewhere accessible is fine, but travelling to Scotland it doesn’t make much difference where the final destination is really.
Do we expect pretty much all casks will be 100% ready, so the tasting is a bit academic?

There’s a new Irish distillery that I visited last week here where I live in Ireland and I’m thinking I’ll buy in to a 200L barrel . Would anyone here be interested, or maybe I will start my own thread.
I’ve read your thread over the years and can see how you all managed a changing situation.
One thing I wonder is the prospectus said matured in smaller barrels but when I saw the barrels they were 200L, is that small?
What is meant by new American Oak, the barrels were old looking to me from Kentucky, the distiller said they were first fill Kentucky bourbon
Any advice welcome.

First fill usually is actually a second fill strangely! Means it is the first time they have a fill in "Europe" (whiskey in US needs to be in virgin oak, so after they have used them once they sell them to use elsewhere, and that is reset to the first fill. Virgin oak would be the same as a new cask, but is not normal to be used for "European" whisky/whiskey, more often as a finish if it is.
200l would be a standard size barrel for ex-bourbon casks. You can get larger casks such as hogsheads, puncheons etc. A lot of the new distilleries would use say 40l casks as these mature more quickly. Generally you get the flavour quickly from them (say 3-8 years) but generally they're not as complex as you need time for that to happen, and if you leave it longer they become too oaky tasting.

Right everyone - it’s been 7yrs can you believe it.
We tasted and bottled the first 3 casks 2 years ago in Feb 17.
The other casks at that time weren’t quite ready but I’m sure they are now.
I’d love a trip in June to taste and then bottle if they are ready but getting a group together is difficult.
So two options - let’s visit in June, taste and then bottle. I’m sure the pub in Creetown would welcome us back.
Or let’s just bottle - I really don’t think we should let them go through another summer.
For me I’d love to get together again and would really welcome a trip to Scotland but failing that let’s just get them bottled.
What do you all think ?

I'm in casks 4,5,6,7,8 and if you experts say they are ready to bottle, then lets bottle. We tasted and bottled the first 3 casks 2 years ago in Feb 17.

Hot octave action available from Raasay distillery; £999, or £5k if you want a 190l barrel.
We need to set a date for bottling, summer is nearly here.
