Pistonheads whisky cask

Whiskybroker (I think the casks were stored there) has closed today until further notice. I guess between the time the economy is on hold and any queue to sort out bottling is done it could be at least 6 months to 1 year before any bottling?
Yep.Still... should have plenty of holiday to take
Hi All,
Being in need of something good to look forward to in these times of peril, I'm going out on a bit of a limb here, but does anyone fancy investing in a cask of whisky again? I've been in touch with Whiskybroker and have their list of casks for sale. I did quite fancy their Caol Ila but at over £8,800 for just the cask, it was a bit out of my price range, so I set my sights lower and I now quite fancy trying the Staoisha so I'm basing this proposal on that cask.
Due to the higher overall cost for this cask (it has about 4 times more spirit as well) compared with last time we did this, I'm going to aim for 20 shares, rather than the 10 we did last time.
Details and possible costs are as follows (to be confirmed with Whiskybroker if this is a go-er!):
Staoisha - Hogshead cask filled on 22/03/2019. 247.3529 litres of spirit at 68% making 168.2 litres of pure alcohol
The only mention I can find of Staoisha is from Bunnahabhain - https://www.whiskynotes.be/2019/bunnahabhain/stois... , now I dare say we are not looking at an £80 final bottle of whisky - but you never know!
https://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/p/47018/bunnahab...
Hogshead cost - £1,800.00
Storage per week - £0.28 (or £14.56 per year)
Estimated storage time - 9 to 12 years maybe??? so £131.04-£174.72 total storage assuming costs remain the same, but as always, subject to tasting every 2-3 years once we get to 4-5 years initially (?) and then every year once we get to around 10 years maybe, depending on how it goes over the preceding years of course!
Bottling costs (at today's prices)
Bottle, cork, cap and label - £2.70
Alcohol duty - was £27.66 per litre of alcohol last time we did this (2017)
All also plus the dreaded VAT!
Working on those estimated prices (and assuming 12 years of storage, no loss to the angels, and no reduction in abv, bottled at cask strength in 50cl bottles etc etc) I make it about £7,960 plus VAT, so about £9,552 for around 494 bottles or £19.34 per bottle, each share giving around 24 bottles max (total cost around £464 at these rough, assumed, averaged, non-scientific figures).
So who's in?? Initial stake is £90, poss plus VAT but I think we paid this at the end of our bottling last time, so maybe not payable until we get to the end/bottling. I'm in (and will co-ordinate it), so that leaves 19 other possible shares. Shall I make a table??

Did you ask about the octaves?David A said:
Would this be peated? I’ve not read any of the details clearly.
Taken from one of the linked website (and clearly I have no way of knowing if this is the same or not - I'm assuming it is as it has the same name...) https://www.whiskynotes.be/2019/bunnahabhain/stois...
Nose: very peaty and rather medicinal. You get burnt heather and charcoal, and sweet peat with vanilla and baked apple. Lots of peppery notes. Also peaches. Salted nuts and smoky bacon. Then some iodine and antiseptics, coming close to the Laphroaig Cask Strength. Water brings out a nice berry sweetness. Mouth: quite hot, with all flavours dialled up to 11. Pepper, roasted nuts, dark smoke and hints of herbal syrup. Camphor and liquorice. Zesty lemons. Same intense coastal side. Water brings out the (pear) fruitiness. Finish: very long, tarry and salty with echoes of vanilla and menthol.
A young rebel, rather monolithic when taken neat, but a very intense peat bomb that will surely appeal to Islay lovers.
Yes, Staoisha is the name for peated Bunnahbhain releases (from IB's). I'm considering it, but have not had tried any before, so am a little unsure for so many bottles, especially when I am not in the UK and have a lot of tax to pay extra as a result. Smaller numbers I could take more easily within airline baggage but 20 bottles or so will be a struggle!

Sunday bump - Anyone else interested?
Sadly S6NJP I’m going to pass, the peated whisky style is my least favourite. If you were going for a sherry finish I’d be jumping at the chance.I’m worried for our Octaves, I don’t think they have been bottled yet, I think whiskybrooker had to close before they got round to it. I hope I’m wrong.
Fingers crossed it won’t be too long and we can get our hands on it.
I’m up for the long drive north and would gladly meet up again with anyone else you could make it.
Don’t we also have some Ben Nevis maturing up there ?
Stay safe everyone.
Not wanting to steal S6PNJ's question, but if there is not enough people for it (are you checking with other friends elsewhere?) I saw a somewhat different opportunity than "normal" - although these may well become more common. Annandale distillery are offering Tequila casks now. Costs are:
200 litres of spirit at 63.5% making 129 litres of pure alcohol
Barrel cost - £2680
Storage per week - free until 10 years
So approximately changes are barrel plus storage costs mean this one is around £680 more expensive, but has a lower abv. so a bit cheaper there. And smaller barrel size. Could this be of interest to anyone as something different, being Tequila?

Hi NRS, no problems, anyone is free to suggest another cask or idea - I haven't offered it to anyone outside of PH as I thought there would be plenty of support on here. There would only be one or two others that I might know who would be interested, so on that basis - even with another 'joiner' this morning, I don't think my proposal is a go-er.200 litres of spirit at 63.5% making 129 litres of pure alcohol

I texted BVT last month and he'd sent the forms in, whether between then and now the bottling has occurred is anyones' guess, if not then it's an indefinite wait until the apocalypse is postponed.
I had an email from WB today about some bottles I have stored with them and I asked about our casks. The reply I've had back is that they can't see any bottlings in for BVT (or IL as his real name). Now, whether this is confusion and they've already been done, I don't know, but if you are in contact with BVT, would you mind asking him where we are with our 4 casks and also the errant missing one please?Time to move forward on a Staoisha cask as well I think. We get as far as:
PH name | Staoisha shares |
S6PNJ | 20 - all below |
David A | 1 |
SlowcoachIII | 1 |
Gribs | 1 |
FunkyGibbon | 1 |
I asked WB about 'buying' or selling the 'unwanted' bottles and the reply I got back was:
WB said:
With regards to the Staoisha Hogsheads, we do not sell on bottles for people. We would make you an offer on a cask in the future and you could retain a number of bottles which would be reflected in the offer.
So the future commitment is potentially reduced, though the initial investment would still stand at 1/20 share. Does this change any one else's mind about wanting in?Gassing Station | Food, Drink & Restaurants | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
