Pistonheads whisky cask
Discussion
Picked mine up this morning, direct from Martin at Whisky Broker in Creetown. It's a shame that COVID pretty much put paid to us assembling up there again, but I'm happy to say that Martin gave my wife and I a 1hr guided tour of his warehouses and it's great to see just how much has changed since we were last there in Feb 2017.
For those that were there back then - do you remember the first warehouse we went into, where our casks were present on the floor and we did the 'un casking' of our first cask? Well, it's now chock a block full to the ceiling with racks and racks of whisky!
Remember the second warehouse that we went into where we saw the whisky barrels being unloaded onto the foam mats? Well, that warehouse is now also full to the ceiling front to back wall - not an inch of empty space!
Remember the empty space to the left of the second warehouse? Well there's now a third warehouse there and the concrete floor was finished just last week. Racking is already going in and I'm sure Martin will have it filled in no time at all!
There is a FANTASTIC amount of whisky in his store and the smell is wonderful! I also stuck my nose into his 25000? litre stainless steel tank full of new make spirit! I could still smell it about 2hrs later - a fab christmas cake spicy warm smell!!
It's also possibly re-invigorated my desire to start another casks or two off - but give me some time to get things sorted. He has plenty of unpeated new make spirit but I'd like to see some of our casks filled with peated new make spirit (maybe the sherry and bourbon casks?) but this might take a small bit of time until he can place his hands on it (but still planned to be this year I think).

Glad you have yours now S6PNJ, I think that's everyone now isn't it ?
Can't believe how much its changed - well done Martin ! Thanks for the pictures.
As for refill I think we should get cracking, personally I prefer unpeated, why don't we do 2 of each.
We have 4 casks to fill, lets fill two with unpeated sprit - and wait for the peated that on its way hopefully ?
What does everyone think ?

My only concern with peated spirit is that it’s often a bit odd with sherry. I’ve had some fantastic drams with the combination but also quite a few that have been really jarring. If it’s very lightly peated I think it tends to work better.
Can I suggest unpeated for 4 and 5. Quite happy to try peated for 6 & 7.
Anyone fancy making a table on Here with the cask owners down the y axis, cask numbers along the x and a choice for peated/unpeated and we’ll just go with the majority?
Not sure a new thread is a good idea - the refill casks 1-3 are all covered in this one (and the elusive cask 8)

Is there a fair way we can go all in? Eg I have a 6 ish bottle share in two casks. Would be just as happy with a 3 bottle share in the four.
If you find somebody to do so some swapping then crack on - just let me know so i can update the share owners spreadsheet thing Added mine in. Was that right?

Lefty - I'm now slightly confused as you are suggesting the opposite of what I suggested (I think). Of our first 3 casks, the first 2 were:
PPX1 peated ex Pedro Ximinez sherry and that tastes fab
and P10 a peated ex Bourbon - my second favourite of the 3.
I'd have thought a peated port and peated rum would be the strange combination rather than what we had initially? What was the refill spirit into casks 1-3? I think it was a Ben Nevis, but was it peated or unpeated?
(PS the rum barrels Martin had in his warehouse just as we stepped inside from the office smelt absolutely wonderful!

The x were there just to show which casks people did not have a share of.
Would everyone like to copy paste and put their preference for peated or unpeated in the casks that they have a share of?
Cheers
For the record I’m in for any refill. Preference is Non peated for all. I’ll refrain from editing further ....
Is this any better?
To remove any confusion, the original casks were:
Cask 4 - PX1 - Unpeated Sherry
Cask 5 - SC100 - Unpeated Port
Cask 6 - SC11 - Unpeated Bourbon
