Well after a visit to the new style Lidl of the future. Verdict, unsurprisingly, it's a meh. A Lidl basically.

No new lines, not a single one that I could see. Perhaps displayed a bit better, certainly fruit and veg is so. Wider aisles.

Possible more non grocery stuff, but it could be that it's just displayed better, more spaced out, not piled up high. Generally looks more modern, but nobody is going to walk in and go "Wow!" apart from dazco who can now easily go for a pee without leaving the store. hehe

Downsides.

Can't find anything, even the till op reckoned she'd walked miles yesterday trying to find stuff.
Whilst there is more shelving and more space to display the stock, lot of empty spaces.
Milk, in those wheeled carts same as other stores, all in a chilled area. Trouble is the chilled area is behind glass doors, so if you're carrying a you have to put the basket down, open and hold the sprung door, pick the milk, pick up the basket, seems a faff about.
Self scan tills, not sure if it was customers being stupid, but there seemed to be a lot of issues. Probably the customers.

So it's a Lidl essentially. Perhaps not as you know it, but in summary, meh.

I may give Aldi a try sometime. In general do their customers bathe regularly? Will I need to wear a mask?

Sorry, no. But it had the 20cm chefs knife, a paring and a bread knife and a small santoku.

It's the set they had ages ago. My local Aldi has had it in the display case from day one. I suspect the no. of people local to it would be interested.

There are lots of men in Aldi called Terry who wear Rolex watches. Go see for yourself.

Enjoy it! It's like shopping on holiday: you are surrounded by people speaking a different language and the items on the shelves look vaguely familiar but have funny names. Oh, and you often find yourself buying a treat or two because it's a good price.

My local Aldi had this set reduced to £99, kicking myself for not buying it!

Albarino Rias Baixas (white wine) in Aldi is only £5.99.

It is good, and I haven't seen it elsewhere for less than £11.00

This is a bargain.

Has anyone seen the 1L bottles of Aldi 'red thunder' recently?

If you haven't tried it, it's a brilliant Red Bull copy - the 1L bottles were really handy for mixing with Vodka - that was the only reason I bought it.

They still seem to be selling the individual cans of Red Thunder - but it's the big bottles I'm looking for.

Think the 2 I go to are both 'new type'. No self serve tills which would be nice, but other than that they're okay. Nothing better/worse than any Sainsburys.

Although Aldi veg tends not to carry a best before date, you can usually find the freshest batch by looking for the highest number on the 4 digit code they print on the label - look for a number like 4605 printed on, if you find another pack with 4606 or 4607, then that's the freshest.
Just for the record (and I'm sure you already know Gareth) those numbers represent the date of manufature. the first number is the year, and the following three numbers are the number of days into the year that particular pack was made. So, 6036 would be made on 5th February 2016, and it will continue until 5365 (31st December). 5366 is 29th February 2016.
I hope that is of some use to you all.

Just for the record (and I'm sure you already know Gareth) those numbers represent the date of manufature. the first number is the year, and the following three numbers are the number of days into the year that particular pack was made. Eh? Must be having a senior moment.

Surely 5365 is 31st December 2015, which isn't exactly a continuation from 6036 5th February 2016?

Thank you both. Very useful.

I bought some tomatoes at Aldi a couple of weeks ago that went mouldy the next day. I'll use this info to prevent such a mishap in future.

I'm sorry to say this, but you're wrong, at least in Aldi and Lidl's case. The first two numbers go from 1 to 52, the second two numbers go from 1-7. They represent the week number of the year and the day of the week that the product was packaged. So if you go into your local Aldi or Lidl next week you should see stuff beginning with a 12 or 13 depending on how fresh it is.

I've tried a few of them, and they are excellent.

The labelling is a bit confusing. I accidentally bought a ginger beer, which I don't like.

One of them is labelled as a lager, but it is more like a light ale. Quite delicious.
