I've been enjoying some 99p ALDI craft ales.
The porter is especially good.

Had the porter last night, its ok. A bit thin, bit weak but pleasantly surprising carbonation.

I've been enjoying these since the summer. Good value at 99p now

Aldi has a partnership running with Marstons Brewery currently. The Mud City Stout and Wild Bill's IPA are both great. £1.25 and £1.19 respectively for a 500ml bottle

This it is all about margin and return on shelf space £££s.

But is it ultimately self defeating?. It may keep the shareholders happy though.
I don't beleive either (Aldi/Lidl) are publically listed companies. They seem to do a darned good job though. The giand Tiger prawns at Aldi look to be cracking value

1. Lidl is a privately owned (family) business.

2. Aldi giant prawns are ok if used in a highly spiced/flavoured dish. They are warm water farmed and as such are without the flavour of, for example, north Atlantic prawns. Texture's not too bad though.

Going to try that soon, but all of their 'Specially Selected' ice creams are nice. The Strawberry Cheesecake is lovely, especially with one of their little meringue nests crumbled over it (becomes a bowlful of crack cocaine without the Police interest hehe )

I like those, and for 99p, a good little bargain

Last night's dinner.

Moules frittes. From Lidl. They were excellent.

If they continue to sell them, then the next time I would drain off the liquid and add some garlic and wine and cook for 20 minutes before returning the mussels.

They were better than anything that I have had in France.

The bottle of wine in the photo was also bloody excellent.

Tonight, I had some "Jamon Serrano Gran Reserva" also from Lidl. My wife is Spanish, and as you can imagine, we spend quite a bit of time in Spain.

I think that this is the best jamon that I have ever tasted. It is in the section with the packets of ham, beef etc. It really is very, very good.

Also got a couple of boxes of their specially selected mince pies, as they won the BBC Good Food blind taste test.
It's the 'Luxury' ones in the green box (Fortnum & Mason clone) that you want. The Specially Selected (in the black box) aren't all that. Well filled, but soggy bottoms frown
After three visits to Aldi to buy some with none left I finally bagged a couple of packs today. The store was so busy the manager was on the till; he said they sold as soon as they were put on the shelf and he was always being asked for them.

We have two Lidl's in town and never found rotten or mouldy fruit and veg in either on them however we have twice found some in Sainsburys.

ours is a really new store and maybe they are just having issues but the other week i spotted at least 5 tubs of furry grapes completely rotten persimmons or kak as they call them.

I have previously found stuff in tesco but not on the scale of the lidl, the store they replaced tho was much better imho

Agreed, we buy a stack of fruit and veg from Lidl every week. We have never had any issues with freshness or quality. We used to do our main shop at WaitNotSoRosey where the opposite was the case

In our local Lidl the veg is usually just oozing and rotting in piles on the floor, often covered in fly and sometimes even scavenging rats etc. Not what we find when buying our papaya in a waitrose anyway.

I like the rest of the shop though, a lot of well priced items, decent layout and some interesting specials

It all depends in my experience, agree about WaitNotSoRosey, our Lidl is variable, some fruit and veg is spot on, some not, definitely not, minority of stuff tbh but sufficiently often to avoid those product lines. Not had any problems in Sainsbury's, but found something dodgy once in Tesco. Odd errors, well they happen, once bitten, fair enough, twice bitten, take a careful look, thrice bitten not shopping there again for that product.
