Aldi has a craft ale promotion running now. I picked up a few yesterday (£1.19/£1.29 per 500ml bottle) with ales from Arundel (Wild Heaven), Robinson's and Wychwood (Dryneck) amongst others.

I was in the local one this morning, didn't see any of those but their usual beers (Rusty Ferret?) are ok.

Their Belgian beer offer starts from this Thursday.

Yes, they have loads of craft beers in mine, good timing for BBQ season. They were all blonde/pale types though so I stuck with the standard bitters.

The mussels they have are great, been eating them for a while. They have added another variant, some sort of tomato and chorizo sauce, that's tonight's dinner. Can't fail at the price, about £1.70, food is for nothing in the place.

Also, thanks to this thread, I now have a growing collection of the shot glasses that the desserts come in. I can see them going the way of the Esso glasses in the 80's, the house will be overflowing with the damn things. Tell you what though, they're a perfect size for a glass of water to wash down an espresso.

On a similar vein, we have a load of tumblers that were originally the small jars of Nutella.

Perfect for a glass of water with a meal.

They have some others but piraat and gulden draak will be nearly 4 quid a bottle in your local world beer outlet!

At 2 quid a bottle I will be late to work Thursday!

See the Belgian beer thread, Lidl have the box of 6 for £10.99, all good & between 7.5% and 10.5% ... very tasty

That box contains some of the best beers in the world, the Piraat and Gulden Draak are delicious (although not quite Westvleteren 12 lick)

Anyone popping in to grab some Belgian beer then grab a few of the French ale's if they have any left over from French week, decent stuff for the price

Speaking of cereals as someone was a page back, Lidl's Bixies I'm certain are simply Weetabix in a different box. The Aldi Wheat Bisks are good, but rougher in texture.

Whatever you do DO NOT buy the Aldi value range in the white box. They're half the price for a reason. I rarely throw food out but they had to go.

Aldi food - not council
Aldi value food - council AF

Though Lidl getting a bashing on the beeb at the moment, basically aiui being a bit tricky in terms of pricing / pack size on certain name branded products, as opposed to own branded stuff.

Presumably Waitrose had a word in the shell like of some luvvies. Listen Waitrose, you don't pull any trees up, price or quality wise at times.

I would almost never buy a branded item from Aldi or Lidl.

They're quite rare in those stores anyway - both companies were built on their reputation for securing high quality, non-branded or own brand goods. I'd only buy a brand there on impulse if I didn't care whether it was good value or not, but generally just avoid them anyway.

Agreeing with other poster above^^, sticking to 'Specially Selected' in Aldi (and Lidl's version) will rarely see disappointment.

Agreed, very little that is branded in Lidl, McVities biscuits at times, which are same / similar price, Cadburys stuff which we don't buy since they've been owned by lizards, what else? Some ice cream is more expensive e.g. Magnum.

In other news there was a test on disposable batteries, Lidl came out best value.

Yup. I think the only 'branded" thing we buy is Marmite.

Funny enough 'Supershoppers' was on ch4 last night and looked into the price of branded things in lidl/aldi and found that they were still always cheaper in the larger supermarkets. For example stuff like a pack 6 pack of heinz beans was 50p/can in the supermarkets but the 5 pack in lidl/aldi were more expensive. Other things like chocolates were slightly smaller portion/weight sizes too.

And if you read the thread^ you'll understand that buying branded goods at Aldi/Lidl is
1. Quite hard, as they are rarely regular items, and
2. Not the point of those stores. They are masters of private label.

Since me and my partner split last September I needed to reduce costs and decided as we have a large Aldi next to work I'd try it. I get 96% of my items from Aldi now apart from a few things like toiletries and cleaning items but food wise great.

Fresh fruit / Veg doesn't last that long so I buy smaller amounts but things like the chicken portions are great, I tend to buy all my meat from Aldi (or if I am near Lidl I will get it from them to but I don't have a local store) I was a snob with canned soup and only have Heinz cream of tomato soup, I tried aldis own and its the same basically its a fraction of the cost and great. Also the own brand garlic bread is stunning. I do find some of the stuff is shocking as above the value value breakfast cereal is bad & crisps last about a week!

I do have a soft spot for the aldi pizza range but tent to limit myself with them but the triple pack is cheap than individual ones!

I rarely buy branded from Aldi. The exception is toothpaste - Colgate is about 90p per tube. An online search suggests it is £3 in Waitrose...

The only branded chocolate we have bought from Lidl has been Ritter sport, where they are truly a different weight size, much bigger than in the main supermarkets, and significantly lower £/ unit weight.

Having said that it's rarely available, and for example, their own brand Bellarom whole hazelnut version tastes like Ritter but in a different shaped bar.
