ALDI & LIDL Food and Drink Worth Trying?
Discussion
Tried the cottage pie in the wood basket as people mentioned it on here - bloody great I loved it. Thanks!

Watch it with this one. It *used* to be great, better than Heinz. I was working for a soup manufacturer last year and on a comparative tasting it was better. However there is a new one, a detuned variant with a new label, and it's nowhere near as good. Still OK but not a patch on last year's version. This will be because Aldi have changed suppliers to save 20p a pallet. They do this regularly and as a result lose some great proucts. Their cider used to be great, then they changed it for some foul artificially sweetened filth.
As I've said before, Aldi manage to be cheap by riding in on everyone else's coat-tails. The big boys do the development, ensure quality systems are in place and factories are clean and well run, which costs money, Aldi then just pop along and say "hey, can we have some of that?" and the manufacturers agree because once the factory is set up it's as easy to make 11,000 as it is 10,000. It works but it's not a business model that can be extended throughout the industry. It's rather like me having access to great used cars for loose change, great, but someone else has to take the hit on the new one and if there were more like me then there wouldn't be the supply of good cars for me to choose from.

The lasagna is good too!
Neh !!!! Was that one of the ones previously implicated in the horsey scandal ?Agree though, chilled cottage pie and lasagna are pretty good.
I've worked for a couple of companies who supply Aldi and their product guidelines/benchmarks are pretty high standard. They generally operate off a similar cost price to the top four but operate off about half their retail margins. That said, their margin expectations are creeping upwards now they've got a good slice of market share so either the quality will start to decline or retail prices will rise. In the category in which I currently work, retails have gone up around 6.5% on average over the last 12 months.

Haddock in cheese & mustard sauce is Also Guiness pork and leek sausages are epic!
I like the fish cakes. They're packaged a bit like Sainsburys's Taste the Difference range. Cod with a mint sauce, haddock with leek and cheese or Salmon with lemon. 30 mins in the oven and lovely with a poached egg on topInteresting challenge coming from Iceland now. One of the offices I work out of has just had a revamped Iceland store open 2 mins walk away. -I popped in.
Far from the grim boxes of vol-au-vent cases and gargantuan Indian starter platters, there's some really good looking stuff. I bought two of their shellfish meals, some venison sausages and some chorizo and pork burgers.
Cooked the the shellfish meal which you just heat through for 7 mins and toss some cooked pasta into. Clams, mussels and scampi in a buttery garlicky sauce. I added a handful of capers and herbs from the garden into the sauce to pour over. Very tasty, enough for two. £3.50. I'll be returning. The steaks looked good too.

Have they given up selling any decent cider (not the 85p/dirt cheap Taurus) or is it just my local stores? Not seen of their 'Vintage' stuff, or anything remotely interesting for a couple of months.
My local one does the vintage in the 750ml bottles. The MIL thought I was pouring out myself a pint of wine the other day, she was impressed! The vintage cider is good, I agree!

We cant do a trip without at least 1 pack of fishcakes, its normally salmon, cod and cheddar or the thai prawn ones.
They're great for a sling it in the oven after work meal with some simple salad or veg.
Smoked haddock, cheddar & leek ones for us last night. With chips & Bramwell's tartare sauce. They're great for a sling it in the oven after work meal with some simple salad or veg.
Christian Horner obviously a fan at Lidl, from the British GP this weekend
Corporate hospitality would be interesting. No doubt Mclaren with their latest woes are down at Iceland.
Just like to point out never get Orlando Chunks for your dog from Lidl. Gave him the squits for the entire weekend. And you know when no sound happens but everyone has to leave the room, whilst he's still asleep...... that's when your dog just "lidl'd"
