Oh, and that fat content as a view on quality. The NI Angus beef is very fatty, that's why it's so good! All depends on if the fat is the outer fat, or the marbled fat within the meat. Massive difference! That % fat indicator certainly isn't a quality guide.
Agree with this, when making burgers for the BBQ I use a proportion of 20% and 5% in my recipe so you get additional flavour and moisture from the fattier mince whilst preserving the size and texture of the burger with the 5%.

Also anyone tried the Monser Roth cherry chilli chocolate? Devine!

mince, is cheaper in Tesco.
So what?

I do most of my shopping in Lidl/Aldi. I am certain on balance it is cheaper than Morrisons or Tesco. But that's not the main reason. The key reason is convenience. They're both closer than Tesco, and massively smaller than Tesco. I couldn't give a fk if after checking the twenty seven varieties of ketchup in Tesco that one is fractionally cheaper per ml than Aldi. I don't need that level of choice, I don't want it. I want in and out quickly. I don't want to buy a mobile phone, I don't wear supermarket clothes, I don't want insurance. I don't want to traipse round three times trying to find pork pies that they've inexplicably put next to the bread rather than the cold meat and snacks.

I top up in the Sainsburys Local next door. Different products, more expensive but convenient. Call me lazy but it's ALL about convenience for me. I'm as stingy as the next Scotsman but there really are better things to be doing than wasting time trying to save 60p on mince.

The one thing that makes me laugh about the get this and that cheaper brigade is that if they're driving around various supermarkets, surely the spend on fuel outweighs any saving? There is an Aldi walking distance from my house and also my office in the UK, so it is closest and, in my opinion, cheapest for me.

In Sweden we don't have Aldi, we have Lidl and also another discounter called Netto. Netto is nearly half the price compared to ICA and Coop (the Tesco and Sainsbury's of Sweden) but their choice is really st compared to Aldi in the UK, so we only buy meat from them. Luckily there is a Netto and an ICA next to each other by our place biggrin The Lidl is about 25km away, so we only go there if we're passing on the way back from the outlaws.

I check out the supermarket offers online first, no petrol costs there smile Location is very important.
We had a new Aldi store open last week, next door to a large Sainsburys - which will mean that Tesco and Morrisons see less of me. The former are about 2 miles away, whereas Morrisons and the large Tesco are approx 4 miles away. We do have a small Tesco convenience store in the village which sometimes has some of the larger store offers.

I popped into Aldi late yesterday afternoon to pick a bottle of their gin up and some tonic bottles. Had thought about getting some cucumber to put in the gin but the big pile of cucumbers had best before dates of 18 and 19 May and weren't reduced. Slice of lemon did instead smile

That's a very good point to be fair, maybe I will take a glance when I need to go shopping as there is a Tesco and a Sainsbury's within a mile of my office. I didn't realise you could check prices online!!

Did anyone get the Halloumi fries?

Can you let us know what they're like before I go trecking about for some.
Yep. Posted above. Last two boxes early afternoon yesterday. Cooked last night served with salad. They’re very salty, dry. Needs the Pomegranite Molases/dressing/dips to cut through that. We used two boxes between five of us, although I think only four ended up eating them. I’m not in a rush to buy anymore. Not sure how the others feel.
Thanks for that don't think I'll bother going out of my way to get them.

With respect, for some of us it's absolutely fk all about price. It's about trying stuff and getting the tip about stuff worth trying, you know, points at thread title.

We hadn't ventured into Lidl or Aldi until spotting some of the things in this thread. We'd gone once into Aldi in a nearby town, seen the awful setup, observed the clientele shambling round with their single eyes in the forehead centre, and cleared off out again pronto.

However in the interim these discounters have upped their game in many ways, and bring stuff that you don't see elsewhere.

At the risk of rolling reminder, they all have things which are good and not so good, things which are good value and others not, things which are on par with anywhere. It's about knowing what you like, and market prices. You, or rather we, don't drive round everywhere every week, but if passing near the place call in, e.g. hardly ever go to Morrison's as it's out of our way, but if passing the front door, well they seem to have a rather good fresh fish counter so...

When we lived in Sweden we shopped in ICA and Coop, sometimes Hemkop, remember them? Lidl was very so-so. There mileage is more of an issue, and if your local is an ICA Nära, and bugger all else for 30 km, well distance really comes into it, and the ability to shop frequently and target your custom is difficult.

Delivery wouldn’t work for me tbh, it’s all about stumbling over something you haven’t seen before. You know, volcanic chilli sauce, Guinness sausages & some rechargeable, shiny flashing thing I have no need for smile

Like a half price bargain hedge trimmer that I still haven’t used.

I think the delivery works for buying wine and beer etc in bulk. Perhaps when the specials come in, furniture, anything advertised in the leaflets etc. And Cheese.

Aldi whole chickens. The medium chickens (which are based on a weight of 1.65Kg) are often up to 2Kg in weight and work our nearly £1 a kilo cheaper than other supermarkets.

If I'm in on my own over a Grand Prix weekend, I always buy a pre cooked chicken and snack on it over quali and the race. Sometimes I even make wraps out of them and give them a good splash of Nando's sauce.

I've no idea which is the better quality, as I live in NI and we get Irish beef in our stores which I buy. The counter mince in particular is one of the highest quality you can buy. My sister worked in meat wholesale industry and basically, Tesco bought all the best meat, with the same Angus beef also being retailed across Europe and sold alongside Argentinean beef as 'worlds premium beefs.

She also previously worked for a manfaturer as sales manager and told me some stories. During a real pork price increase issue around 5 or 6 years ago, wholesale pork was getting increasingly expensive. She met all the buyers of their pork range and basically said, we need to charge you more. The only alternative was to change the recipe. Only Tesco and M&S paid the price increase, I'll leave you to guess who changed the recipes to keep the price down.

You also have the common myth that butchers are better quality than regular retailers. The reality is, most butchers are simply retailers in the same/similar supply chain, buying wholesale meat, with a butcher sign on the shop window. Unless you know the supply chain, this is another common myth you see rolled out with no real foundation to the argument.

I'm fortunate enough to know the supply chain of my fruit, veg and meat and know where most of it comes from, as NI is quite a small country. It good to know stuff like this, I find it quite interesting smile

Oh, and that fat content as a view on quality. The NI Angus beef is very fatty, that's why it's so good! All depends on if the fat is the outer fat, or the marbled fat within the meat. Massive difference! That % fat indicator certainly isn't a quality guide.

Tesco's, the highest quality mince you can buy?
Tesco buy all the best meat?
Tesco beef sold as 'the world's premium beef'? Not even Argentinean is sold as the world's premium beef.
NI beef is very fatty , which is why it's so good?
% fat indicator is not a quality guide?

Are you aware that you have posted this drivel?
Do you not read it back and say to yourself , 'hmmm, something here doesn't add up'?
