Tesco has decided to launch a discount chain called Jacks.

Clearly they have way too much money and no idea what to do with it, as this isn't going to go well for them.

When you're good at being Tesco, why would you think you'd be any good at being Aldi, when Aldi has 70 years' experience of being Aldi?

Companies should stick to what they know.

Sainsbury's had a go at being Aldi in 2016, and stopped again within months.

Aldi and Lidl rival set up by Tesco.

Tesco seem to think that the only USP of Lidl and Aldi is that they are cheap, so does that mean the Tesco Value idea was a failure? I can only see this going the way of the 'New Netto'.

Popped into Lidl on the way home last night. They have their Christmas stock on sale (mince pies, stollen, mulled wine etc). It's only mid-September FFS!

You git! Mini stollen lick once mentioned cannot be deterred from somehow leaping off the shelf and landing in the trolley.

The Jacks opening today/soon apparently was built to be a Tesco but mothballed due to market downturn.

If you think about it Tesco’s already have a string of One Stops that could quite easily be turned to the Jacks model.

Either way interesting times ahead with this and also the proposed Sainsbury/ Asda merger.

It's true that one of the issues for Sainos was their (in)ability to scale their discount offer quickly. Whereas Tesco has loads of supermarkets and convenience stores which aren't making the grade, so could field 60 new Jacks stores within a few months.

Lidl bake lovely all butter croissants but have reduced the size by I’d guess by a quarter/third. You’d nearly eat two now. And they think we don’t notice, stts

Another LIDL one, but the coated oven chips (McCain ripoffs) in the green plastic bag are really, really good.

And even further off-piste, Iceland are doing a range of 'authentic' Mumbai street food curries. Small portions but 4 for £5 and we're very impressed.

There’s a discount chain in NYC and other parts f the USA called Jacks, has similar branding as well. I would Nader are they linked?

Companies should stick to what they know.

No. The Tesco chain is called Jack's after their founder, Jack Cohen.

Really?

I (very) wrongly assumed it was a spin on 'UnionJack/s'.. because the article I read was really pushing the '8 out 10 products will be British' and it was the whole 'taking the fight to the German discounters' for a post Brexit country... Opps. paperbag

It is a rubbish name and the whole 'WIGIG' range of tatt sounds even worse.

I saw them in store and was tempted by the shallow casserole, but they only had it in grey, whereas I prefer red. Also thought the grill rack was good but thought it would be too big for my grill/oven - likewise the roaster. The large casserole was huge and therefore not practical for me.
Instead, I bought the 2 mini casserole dishes for £3.49 smile
I think Lidl are doing similar in a week or so.

I have bought the fresh pack of 2 beef wellingtons for £4.99, which I hope to try at the weekend.

The Aisle of Dreams is being renamed to "Middle of Lidl" having just looked at the App. Maybe it's been that for some time and I've got the observation skills of a myopic mole.
