ALDI & LIDL Food and Drink Worth Trying?
Discussion
The Germans are good at what they do. Tesco became complacent and prices weren't that competitive. A 40 quid shop in Lidl is a 60 in Tesco. And quality really is getting better not everywhere though(veg), choice is the disadvantage. I had some 69p craft lager, Tesco would have been a quid more expensive. I'm glad Alidl are there they seem to be very customer orientated over profits, constantly improving as well.

For me around here aldi looks like its been ransacked or the manager just forgets to order stock
I have three branches that I use. One of which is always very low on fruit and veg. I'm an 8am shopper, so I only ever see a tidy, fully-stocked store.

What time of day do you go? Even though Aldi is open until 10pm, its trading style really doesn't suit such late shopping. It is modelled to sell out of and then replenish a large proportion of its fresh food on a daily basis.

The branch that is always low on stock ,I visit at lunchtime. They even be sold out of bananas I'm an 8am shopper, so I only ever see a tidy, fully-stocked store.
I still happily shop there. I have to drive past an Aldi to go to a Lidl so very rarely go there.

What do you mean produced in UK.
They don't import German chickens.. most will be contract manufactured in the UK, fresh is UK as it usually says on the label. The thing is Lidl and Aldi are very different to the German ones, sone many British specific products.
Here in Scotland the majority of Aldis fresh meat is Scottish - far more so than in the likes of Tesco. Both Aldi and Lidl source their milk up here from Grahams of Bridge of Allan. They don't import German chickens.. most will be contract manufactured in the UK, fresh is UK as it usually says on the label. All supermarket chicken in the UK is produced by 2 or 3 firms. Aldi and Lidl are no different in buying from the same suppliers as Asda and Sainsburys etc.
There is a difference Lidl use standard plus birds and Aldi standard, basically if the shed has windows. Waitrose and marks and Spencers use high welfare birds as standard, rest use mix.Riley Blue said:

Probably bit late in the day but noticed Lidl voucher on front page of Sun, £10 off when you spend £40 or more.
In today's Times too. Fantastic offer.MrJuice said:
Lidl:
The Portuguese custard tarts are excellent at 49p
400g strawberries at 1.19 is just silly cheap.
The tarts are fantastic. The Macau version's pastry (from Chinatown) is (IMO) superior. But then they do cost well over twice as much, and the Lidl filling is (IMO) superior to that of the Macau version. MrsIA2 gets two every Lidl visit. Quite delicious. The Portuguese custard tarts are excellent at 49p

The strawberries were silly cheap (IMO) for a reason :-(

Don't count on foreign strawberries being any good. If the taste is decent the texture is horrific and vice versa.
On that note, the expensive ones in the co-op are the best I've ever encountered- when in season here that is.
Genuinely perfect.
There should be plenty strawberries from the garden this year. Fingers crossed. On that note, the expensive ones in the co-op are the best I've ever encountered- when in season here that is.

Certainly the £5 off £30 voucher that we used on Thursday applied across the board. We had to struggle to get 30 quids worth of stuff, but fairly well stocked up at the moment.
(Though I'd rather have four bottles of Alid's Cremant de Jura!)
