A women loaded up the checkout behind me and placed some sorbet on the conveyor that looked delicious. Bit late to go hunting but went back today and picked up a mango and a raspberry. Lovely not sure kids will love it but a tasty adult treat.

The South Carolina footlong hot dogs were in yesterday, £1.69 for the pack of 2, so I got a pack along with some part baked baguettes to make MASSIVE HOT DOGS!! hehe

Get yourself an ice cream machine. Sorbets and ice creams soooo much better (and cheaper). We've had one for years now and it has paid for itself many times over. (As has the Bread machine).

What's the latest Lidl & Aldi wine recommendations?

I know the Toro Loco used to be good, but they changed it recently?

The toro loco is still okay but the £4.99 lidl cote du rhone is excellent value. Not to be confused with the £4.49 CDR which is just about ok.

Be careful out there shoppers.

Pretty shocking stuff.

This is my branch of choice, it's right opposite the Edgbaston cricket ground!

Might explain why there were two huge security guys on duty yesterday.

Ten patrol cars dispatched to deal with a water fight? Someone should tell Boris there's no shortage of Police after all.

I thought they were after the Animus Portuguese red after Oz Clarke's favourable review last week.

That’s nothing compared to the scenes in both my local Waitrose and Tesco yesterday. All fridge AND freezer stock had to be binned after a failure caused temperatures to exceed the legal limits. Apparently happened in Tesco in next town over and having googled a fair few of their stores.

Open freezers have always seemed pointless use of energy to me. What a waste.

Oh dear - just heard the same thing happened in our Morrisons.

Only one member of staff on the tills this morning as all other staff had to restock all chilled and frozen stock - the waste must have been horrendous.

Lots of lights out in our Aldi this evening too - seemed a bit odd.

Such a shame they couldn’t stick a couple of BBQs on in the car park and cooked it all up straight away - donation from customers and money to charity.

I’d already done my shopping in Aldi but had instructions to buy a fan for my parents - the shelves were of course empty. Much like the fridges and freezers.

They’re fridges not freezers.

They should be enclosed though so save energy.

A fridge at my local Tesco packed in a while ago, suddenly the barriers came down and all the food was being removed. After asking what was happening they said they needed to bin it all, I said they should give it away at the door but they weren’t allowed.

There would’ve been no harm to the public.

Don't they have insulated roller blinds to be pulled down to minimise energy use? Our Tesco's chilled units do that in very hot weather, and yes it's a pain when idiot customers can't be bothered to close the blinds afterwards despite the signs.

Fully aware they’re fridges. I didn’t take photos of the empty freezers. But they too, were empty and of the open variety.

Not in this store to my knowledge. Apparently the whole system failed. I took the above photos but didn’t take any of the empty freezers. They’re the open open ones below with door in cupboard style above. Tesco Extra so fairly large store. Soooo much wastage. The next town over too which is a slightly larger store. And Waitrose.

My son walked down one aisle and managed to grab two bottles of Innocent Smoothies (Which we’re still cold) from a shelf the staff were clearing. They asked him not to but he retorted something about wastage and he was buying them regardless. He wasn’t refused at the till point.
Neither of us have had any side effects from drinking them.

Innocent smoothies are incinerated before being bottled so I doubt they'd cause any problems being out of the fridge

So this wouldn’t have have happened if supermarkets were prepared to pay that bit extra to have refrigeration systems that work higher than 30degrees ambient. All supermarkets want now are systems that will work for the cheapest price. They don’t want to pay extra to have it work up to 35 degrees plus. Then when the st hits the fan and the temps do hit that we get it in the neck for not keeping there systems working. You also need to remember that if it’s 30 degrees outside, on the roof it could be 35 degrees plus especially on flat roofs with lots of units running on a day with not much wind.

As to putting doors on the chillers, it would massively reduce the cooling capacity needed and probably save the a small fortune but supermarkets don’t like a barrier between the product and the customer. It is starting to be pushed more due to saving electric and so they can say they are trying to save energy and look good to the customer. The problem is the extra expense and the up keep of maintaining the doors as they take a hell of a lot of stick from customers meaning lots of repair bills.
