Aldi British rib of beef was the centrepiece on our Christmas table today. It was excellent, really very very good - at £25 for a 2 kg joint it was one third the price of an inferior one I bought from Farmison two years ago.
I'm looking forward to some cold beef with pickles and cheese & onion crisps tomorrow whilst watching wall to wall football.

Any decent gins at Aldi ?
Hortus is worth a go
Hortus is a Lidl Gin.

The Aldi Oliver Cromwell London Gin is (or was a few day’s ago) on offer at around £12 for 1l. Throw in a decent tonic and/or some Prosecco or Elderflower Liquor etc and it’s perfectly acceptable.

I liked the Needle Gin Aldi had previously but haven’t seen it in my local this year. They have a fair few small batch Gins in and I’ve always found google reviews to be fair and honest.

I've also seen plenty of 'disappointed' feedback about Lidl's Hortus range.

In our family and circle there are a couple of devoted gin fiends, buy 28 quid bottles of Hendricks, top price Fever Tree tonics, go to gin festivals and so on. Now Mrs and I don't drink, more or less, long story, not TT but last alcohol I had must have been February. Anyway they rocked up at our place recently and they happily got stuck into what was on the shelf, Sainsbo's own brand London gin and some Tesco brand cheap Indian tonic. Stopped buying Hendricks apparently.

Gretchen, you''ll be pleased to know the violet creams are now reduced to 79p. I took the last from our store but plenty of strawberry/rose and orange creams left.
I also bought some Aldi sloe gin mince pies following recommendations on here, as they were reduced to £1.49 and their everyday mince pies are now reduced to 29p. mini stollens down to 49p. There were lots of half price stickers on the party food too.

I too purchased a .49p Stollen and some .29p Mince Pies after work today. Along with two white Egyptian Cotton Bath sheets and two bath towels reduced to £4.99 and £3.99 respectively. £17.96 for four good sized/quality towels.
Alas despite my rifling I couldn’t find any of the Violet Creams cry plenty of the Pink Gin, Mint and other flavours. So I picked up another litre of Gin for £12.99 to commiserate with.

Agreed. I’ve bought it before as a quirky gift for a local PHer friend but I wouldn’t buy it again.

Bloody Bengal knocked a box of my Violet Creams off the side last night and shared them with the dogs. Fuming.

To any Camembert lovers. Aldi currently have in a fancy Christmas packaged on at three pound, which S has had before. Today she's had the £1 variety from the cheese fridge, and she can confirm it's the same stuff!

They (Lidl and Aldi) always do this. I buy the £1 one regardless. Same with the Pate and other sundries too. Unless it’s post Christmas and they’ve marked it down. Like the £3 down to £2.49 Stilton with miniature Port that’s now .99p smile

Hope you both had a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you

Very nice and relaxed, and that's from me, not a huge Christmas fan. And you too darling x

Their mini Christmas cakes are amazing - now half price at 99p.

homemade chilli....its good but i picked up a pack of the specially selected Mediterranean pittas, they're awesome just lovely round pillows of fluffiness once toasted.

The coconut macroons in the basked good section are pretty good too.

one thing that is peeing me off, is very short dates. Bought a pizza had one day left on it. And it happens a lot with most fresh food, never the same at Tesco etc at least get 3 days plus shelf life.

I don't think that's something you can exclusively level towards Aldi / Lidl. I've been caught out in all the big supermarkets in the UK and Sweden with very shortdated meat produce. I just check the dates now when I am buying and will have a little rummage around the fridge for something longer dated but will just not bother buying if I can't find it.

Bread is shocking at mine, whole crates going out of date on the day.

This is the big peril of ordering groceries online. I had my big Christmas food shop delivered on the 20th, loads of stuff was going out of date before the 25th! ARGH!!!
