At the risk of sounding like my Lithuanian mother who is as tight as two coats of paint, the dates are just a suggestion anyway, as long as it smells good then you'll be fine. Not ideal when you're buying it on the day but a decent temperature fridge will keep things good a few days after the supermarket get out of jail date clause.

My approach -
Best before - check it, probably ok, doesnt bother me
Use by - probably best taking notice of the date and chucking it out

Those pittas suggested by andburg do look excellent, will be tried later.

On the subject of things that pees one off, and just doesn't apply to Aldidl but all the supermarkets. You find something you like, it's clearly a popular seller, then they stop doing it - no call for it sir; or bugger around with it - new improved recipe sir, nope cheaper recipe more like.

Worried that Aldi going to stop doing the part baked sourdough baguette, store cupboard essential in our house, none in this morning, shelving taken over by part baked dinner rolls.
That follows on from the dopiaza curry mix being discontinued.

That's probably the right approach, but there's new kid on the block - Display Until. That's where the sniff test comes in.

Anyone noticed that the Aldi toilet roll cores are slightly bigger meaning less bog roll.

They have also made the extra sting bin liners a lot thinner and now they are just very average bin liners, little things that save them a bit of money but make me do the shopping elsewhere sometimes.

Ask to speak to a Manager and they’ll usually let you take it half price. My local Aldi and Lidl are good at keeping stock levels. I often pick stuff up with a week date left and they’ve already discounted it.

The pack will give you the number of square metres of paper per bog roll you're buying. Has that changed?

I've just started going to Lidi or Aldi (can never remember which one!). Hate the shopping experience, but the steak we had was good and so was the lamb joint! Will be going back again smile.

Hate the experience?

Trudging around 10,000sq ft rather than 60-100,000 sq ft is ace. And the interlude that is the Aisle of Dreams or Middle of Lidl makes every trip an adventure.

I think the experience is significantly better than the 'superstores' of the last 40 years, and that's before I even consider the quality of the food.

I am a huge Aldi / Lidl fan but I am not a huge fan of when they are busy. Luckily I can usually go in the quiet periods but I've done a few trips to both during peak hours and it is not a pleasant experience. Tesco etc aren't much better but Aldi / Lidl are horrific when busy.

Mines never seems busy at all until the world decides to use the one checkout that's open just when I want to checkout...

As much as they throw the stuff at you faster than anyone can bag, it still takes an age. Ofcourse you could join the fight with the others when checkout 2 is opened, but you always seem to have a few items just going on the belt and the masses of lucky shoppers who are behind me manage to get served first.

I do enjoy the middle. I got a hotdog toaster once hahahaha.

I get it, I have 2 of each nearby and issues are different with each.

ALDI 1 - near home, built for Aldi but 5 Aisles so going down each in turn leaves you at the wrong end of the store and when pallets are out for restocking you can only get by them on 1 side
ALDI 2 - near work, older store not purpose built and layout completely different to any other, bulk special buys like pop/beer are actually behind the checkouts.
LIDL 1 - town centre, parking controls and really rundown/disorganised inside
LIDL 2 - off my normal routes but new, floor and freestanding freezers/fridges with doors and no parking controls

minor frustrations but i've got used to it all by now.

I concur. The only thing I will trudge around a large supermarket for is to get my step count up.

did the food shop yesterday. aisle of dreams beckoned me over and before I knew what had happened I'd put a pair of walking boots, a fleece, and 6 pairs of pants in my trolley.

Now I've got an image of Burt Reynolds and Jon Voight gathering supplies in an Aldi in Norwich or Tiverton.

Can anyone reccommend if any of the whiskys from aldi and LIDL are any good? (i would much prefer LIDL, as its easier to get to).

i normally drink it on ice, however lately i've enjoyed having it 50/50 with some soda water
I quite like Lidl's Queen Margot 8yo - there was a bit of a furore earlier this year when people where misreporting its success at the World Whisky Awards but it stands up well for the price.
An update on this. I bought the whisky today and i'm currently drinking it. For £13 is ok..but gripe is that although its 40%ABV it doesn't taste very alcoholic. It doesn't have a kick to it, or strongness. You wouldn't think you're drinking something that's 40%..more like something that's 30-35%. Giving it a sniff test and it doesn't have the alcoholic whiff..

I did try it neat. but it did not excite. so I'm drinking it as a highball with soda. its fine, no offensive tastes to it. But doesn't feel much like i'm drinking booze.

Nearest Aldi to Tiverton is in Cullompton, I'll have you know.

Fastest way from Tiverton to Cullompton is the back road over the hill, but it's single or 1.3 track for a fair part of the way, and if you see someone with a banjo thumbing a lift, don't stop.
