You don't half notice the difference in till speed throughput when you have to use one of the 'big four'.

Like night and day.

I live about 5 minutes away from a Morrisons and I refuse to go there for anything purely because the service is so slow. Even when the shop is quiet it always takes a ridiculous amount of time to just pay for your stuff and leave.

I like Aldi's system or dump it all in the trolley at speed and pack it on the shelf / straight into bags in the back of the car.

What I want to know is how Morrisons managed to get self service checkouts so wrong - they are absolutely fking horrific!

At least the ones in Asda etc actually work pretty well - Morrisons must've got a good deal from whoever manufactures the st they have - I notice it's the same ones as B&Q where they work well if you're scanning one or two fking heavy things rather than a million different small things.

The tills at Aldi are quite straightforward once you've got in the 'zone' - simply put the shopping on the conveyor in the right order you want them in your trolley I.e. Heavy stuff first then open out a big IKEA bag in your trolley, pack everything in and then it goes straight in the boot, voila!

Suoermnarket settings on the bagging area scales can cause problems with light items too, so i suspect it's far worse with the B+Q ones if they are set up to accept bigger weights than the supermarket ones

Did our shop at Aldi today for the first time, so far the Veg tastes just the same as Tescos, so considering it is cheaper I imagine I will be back.

Are there any things you wouldnt buy from Aldi? I know they have a limited range, but perhaps milk or eggs, or is it a much of a muchness

Depends what you buy really, if you cook fresh you can substitute almost everything. If you buy ready meals Tesco's etc.. have a far wider range. I used to do 90% of my shopping at Tesco but now I probably do 75% at Aldi and there's really no difference in the food i cook.

We do the bulk of our shopping at Aldi, get our baby daughter's nappies, milk, food from asda and then any bulk items from makro when there's offers on, really worth it in the long run.

We've moved on to Aldi nappies for our youngest, they're perfectly acceptable - they do what they need to do with no complaints!

Aldi nappies are indeed very good, and well priced.

Regarding the check out service though, I like to pack my bags neatly and in order of heaviest and largest items first etc. I find the procedure at our local Waitrose a much more pleasant affair. As per time spent in a queue, you've got to be kidding? The Aldi way is much slower, as they only ever have a maximum number of 3 tills open. Never have to wait so long even as at the local Morrison's! It's also always full of old people who whether you like it or not, are just slow at everything. I can imagine it works correctly in Germany, but over here we just fanny around at everything.

I just find I can't do my entire shop at Aldi. I still always need to go to a proper supermarket to get all of my goods. For that reason, other than nappies, wine and/or cheap party food I have to go elsewhere.

Dont know at what time you visit your Aldi store, but no way is it slower ---it's a whizzy thing.

Never seen the max of 3 open either, they always open others if the queues get a longish.

Bombadier golden something ale, refreshing with a nice hoppy taste. A good one for a hot day. £1.25 a bottle atthe moment.

Edit: Bombadier burning gold.

Aldi is great IMO. Okay not everything is perfect but when I use to shop at Tesco or Sainsbury's, I'd regularly get £60+ weekly shops. In Aldi, even doing a 'big' shop I rarely get over £45. More often than not it's about £38-£40 and I get plenty of food for the week. Their fruit and veg can be limited but it's really good. Their papaya when it's in, has been consistently good for me.

So far I've tried a few cereals; the weetabix and crunchy nut cornflakes knock-off's I can't tell the difference and the one they do with either chocolate or pecan in the clusters are lovely.

I also really recommend the Petit Sale (Cassoulet) they have in at the moment. It's cheap (£1.99 a tin?), high in protein and tastes really good (I put in a bit of chili powder). Their surface and floor wipes I also recommend and are cheap. Milk and eggs are good too.

My complaints would be that the bigger blue bags you buy aren't as strong as I'd wish, sometimes not a huge selection of things and stuff does run out quite a lot. I'm also not a fan of their till system but I guess it does get people through.

I rarely use any other supermarket now, mainly for some toiletries or other branded items I prefer, but if you're looking to cut shopping bills, you really can at Aldi and still have plenty of food!

Oh yeah, their toilet and kitchen roll is good (their slightly more expensive ones). Got caught out buying some toilet roll from the Spar last time as it was a memory jog and that stuff is a joke.

Home Bargains for those plus toiletries and kitchen/cleaning stuff. Nicky brand toilet rolls are great, under £4 for 18 rolls and it's top notch stuff, better than Andrex and the like.
