Maybe monitor what's in the oven, rather than take suggested cooking times as gospel?
Yes and no.

As a general rule it's advisable to keep an eye on ho stuff is cooking, especially if you've not had it before.

But certain foods need to be cooked in certain ways, so if your oven isn't reaching accurate temperatures you simply won't get a good quality outcome, e.g. if a pizza's instructions are 10 mins at 200C, then no amount of cooking at 160C is going to get you a good pizza - you're simply not subjecting the various elements to the correct 'shock' of heat to make them do what the manufacturer intended.
Always hire a good personal chef thermometer.

I've had this problem with various frozen foods and with a number of ovens over the years, thermometers have shown it's not my oven. Some things cook to perfection as per instructions, but many things just don't.

I think we've proved, over many years, that most issues in your life are self-inflicted hehe

I agree with that, but even our Neff, right from the start wasn't heating to the temps on the oven dial, so a cheap and easy fix means stable, correct temps all the time. I habe been baking bread for around 20 tears, I can only imagine what a loaf baked at 160C would taste like.

Git! tongue out

My supermarket gripes have been pretty much over this last year having found a nice Aldi at Ashbourne with better staff/clientele and by avoiding all those places that used to wind me up.

Not bad a dirty cheat with the kebab wraps

Just drain the fat out of the pot and stand upright for 10 minutes before you chop it up to get some proper crisp

I’m over in Ibiza and the only local shop to us is a Lidl, which is surprising as we’re in a €3.5m villa and it’s not the most expensive by a long shot. So having never been to a Lidl before I’ve now been 4 days on the trot - and am amazed by the quality and selection. I can see my Waitrose card being used significantly less often on my return.

Lidl and Aldi Nord/Sud can be better abroad (France/Germany/Netherlands) in my experience. British stores are better though.

I think that they were more closely aligned in the early 00s, but we were less inclined to accept their boxes on the floor style. At that time their range was larger and common products were noticeably cheaper.

It is a shame that they have become more ‘English’. I don’t mind the better shops but I miss the continental products. I *think* that Lidl has changed slightly less in this regard.

Netto was always closer to its roots hence it didn't do well here. Mysterious chocolate in plain white wrappers it just screamed eastern bloc smile (yes i know it is Danish)

Agreed, Aldi seems to be preserve of ‘middle England’ nowadays, ready meals, speciality products etc.

It’s along way from where it started here…

Lidls specials today. Duck legs and persimmons, go quite nicely with their Saint Emilion Grand Cru.

That is one of my favourite wines. It's routinely €10 here but periodically gets reduced to 8 and that's when I pounce. Bought 4 half-cases last week actually.

Definitely, but they only come in 6s. I guess not every customer over here shares my alcohol dependency. nuts

I picked up a cast iron griddle pan for £15 in the Aldi aisle of tat yesterday. I'm having a steak on Monday night so it'll get its first run out then.

Feels and looks like a decent bit of kit.

Alcohol is cheap here. You can get a genuinely decent bottle of red, especially Portuguese, for three euros. Fags and fuel are also comparatively cheap, but everything else is obscenely, world-leadingly fking expensive!

Benefit double chocolate cereal bars. S likes the Cherry Bakewell flavoured ones off these, often treating one as breakfast when going over the birds first thing, so I picked up a 5 pack of these. We both agreed, bland as a very bland thing, very little flavour of anything much.

At 62 calories a throw, I can't say I'd expect much more than chewing a cereal box.
