At my local fish and chip shop, The Wetherby Whaler in West Yorkshire, it is £5.40 for haddock and chips.
I was in the Wetherby branch yesterday, in the restaurant. Large haddock, chips, peas, bread & butter, pot of tea was £13.40boxxob said:

That looks like something I let out this morning before I went to work, batter shouldn't be smooth, yuk.
You may often see some crispier edges (say, attached batter 'bits') but that fish looks fine. Will be cooked in beef dripping, I expect (few years since I was in wetherby). Not all batters look the same when fried. If you look on their site it doesn't look like that either.
You may not like the look of that haddock from the Wetherby Whaler, but it is nicer than the fish served at the chip shop down the road from my work.
I got fish and chips on Friday (£5.05 so not cheap) and it was rank, the fish wasn't white, it looked more like salmon. It was that bad it went in the bin uneaten.
This is from a chippy in a little village where the fish is cooked to order.
I don't know why it was a funny pink colour, but it has put me off going there in the future.

Nearest one to me is Toffs of Muswell Hill (North London)
It is £8.50 (!) for regular fish and chips, and £11.20(!!!) for a large, so clearly aimed at the media yuppies.
Despite this there is a massive queue on Friday evenings.
I have been a few times, first couple were great last time was average and very oily. Fish brothers in Finchley used to be good but that has gone to pot. The rest of the local places are horrible kebab joints.
Let's be honest London is probably one of the worst places in the UK to get fish and chips!

I like Toffs but don't go there often. You might want to try the Priory fish bar on Priory road, that's where we normally go it's not bad.It is £8.50 (!) for regular fish and chips, and £11.20(!!!) for a large, so clearly aimed at the media yuppies.

Paid £7.50 for cod and chips in St Mawes a few weeks ago, nice chips but the batter wasn't great.
Our local here in Bristol - Pisces, is pretty decent, about £6 for cod and chips. It featured on Alex Polizzi's programme a few years back and went through a big transformation.
Best I've had is from one of the chippies in Peranporth, I love getting it then going down to the beach to watch the evening sea.

IIRC, Nick the Fish in Penn Hill, Poole, is ~£5 for regular cod and chips. Their large cod barely fits in the recatngular box. It's bloody massive, and would still only be about £6.40 incl. chips.
They know where their fish is from, and even the trawler it was caught from!
(Allegedly! It's on the wall behind the counter.)
