Why so few drive-through takeaways?
Discussion
It's probably been asked before on here, but any discussion held with friends seems to always resound in absolute positivity.
Why not an Italian or Indian drive through chain?
Would it be that hard to drive up to an ordering bay, choose your pasta or rice type, choose your sauce/main...and have it served in a plastic dish with plastic cutlery?
I understand quality will be reduced, but it can't be hard to keep a vat of bolognese, or tikka masala or even chilli con carne and just serve it up whilst still being edible!
(I've just this summer turned into a student again, at 27years old, so I've suddenly become a lot more imaginative. You don't even want to hear about my design of hamster/rabbit water bottles with an LED warning light on the top for when it runs out...)

But a vat of chilli, or tikka masala, or...spag bol isn't difficult?
It's actually more difficult than having burgers, pizza's or kebabs ready on the spot!
Because not everyone wants a chicken tikka masala, there are about 40 curries on an Indian menu and about 20 pizzas on a standard Italian menu so what are you going to do? It's actually more difficult than having burgers, pizza's or kebabs ready on the spot!
Plus big chains can absorb the waste into their cost model and they have loads of computers that forecast demand telling them how much of each burger to have ready.

I can't believe we don't have more standard drive throughs like BK / Mcdonalds.
They're everwhere in the US - and so convenient.
I can only think of 3 Mcdonalds drive throughs - Sutton, Wandsworth and Chichester.
Do you really like your car's interior smelling of fried gristle? They're everwhere in the US - and so convenient.

You need to find a Big Johns outlet. They're usually in the midlands - I can particularly vouch for the Leicester one.

Their chicken naan kebabs are unreal and filthy cheap too, I've posted up a pic of one somewhere in this thread a while ago.

There are LOADS of McDonalds drive throughs.... there's one next to my work (next to Gatwick south terminal), two within 2 miles of where I live (Rochester and Strood), and there loads more all over the country - never had any problems finding one when I've been travelling. Burger King, however, only seems to have a handful around the country.

Because if you drop a burger or chips in your car, it's no big deal. If you drop a curry however... big problem!Would it be that hard to drive up to an ordering bay, choose your pasta or rice type, choose your sauce/main...and have it served in a plastic dish with plastic cutlery?

But not many sit & eat it in the car.
I disagree, I'd say a lot of people eat it in the car, which is why they use the drive through and don't eat in the restaurant. Many eat it on the move, and some park in the car park to eat it. Maybe those people buying McDonald at around 6pm or thereabouts would be more likely to order food to take home for an evening meal, but at most other times people tend to eat on the go.
Next time you visit, take a look at the overflowing bins in the car park!

Why don't we have any drive-through coffee outlets?
In the US you can barely drive five miles without passing one.
Over here we neef to park for a decent coffee or service station for barely drinkable guff.
McDonalds again. I think their coffee is ace, regardless of what coffee snobs say. Compared to other popular offerings, of course. In the US you can barely drive five miles without passing one.

There's a drive through Starbucks next to Trafford Centre and one in Preston (next to Deepdale) - the company running them (based in Blackburn I think) have plans to open more if the demand is there (can't find the article now, but they were talking big things!)In the US you can barely drive five miles without passing one.
